Hounds of shadow

Just rereading the prologue and realised that the five hounds of shadow don't seam to be running from the Degorath in the first scene. Either they managed to escape or this scene is in fact before the events of BH. In fact I don't recall any real mention of the hounds in RG, though I don't have it to hand. Thoughts...

They probably managed to elude them or simply the Deragoth were unwilling to follow the hounds into shadow. Perhaps the Hounds are more powerfull than the Deragoth there.

No because when paran releases them in BH, shadowthrone says something like they will tear shadow apart looking for the hounds

Didn't they get distracted by the Trohl'barahl thing anyway?

I think you have a point there. It seems they had some plan for him, maybe more important that catching the hounds.

I always understood that there was a serious animosity between the Trohl'ba-however you spell it and the Deragoth, and that's why Paran went to find the Deragoth in the first place. Something along the lines of the Trohl guys trying to usurp the Deragoth's power base or something?

That would make sense. I always thought that it was a bit of overkill to send the Deragoth after him, of course Paran had no idea how weak he had become but still.

True otherwise he would have gotton the hounds of shadow to do it.
But when ST and paran talk one of the bits ST says is that the hounds won't bother with dejim till they got their shadows or something, so he sends the hounds of shadow to get dejim and lead the degaroth to the temple of Poliel.

I think he mentions at one point that the Degaroth were the ones who caught him the first time...

Paran: "Look! Distraction goddess!"
Deragoth: OM NOM NOM
Hounds of Shadow: "LET'S LEGGIT!"
Deragoth: "Wait, what?"

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Dessimbelackis, the first emperor, made the Trohl'barahl, then when he could not control it he used the Deragoth to help him seal it away untill the nameless ones freed him.
Near the end of TBH (pg 557 trade paperback) the hounds had gotten away and had returned to the shadow realm, while the Deragoth were killing the Trohl'barahl and Poliel

yes
The question is, why didn't the Degaroth THEN resume the pursuit of the Hounds, the way ST in TbH was afraid they would?

The hounds went into witness protection and are now the mules of death!

Perhaps a more interesting question still is where are the Degaroth now and what are they upto

What else to large, angry dogs do?
Theyre probably sniffing at each other's rears and ruunning around in circles in some warren.
Or possibly they are restarting a colony in 7C? It was their home, after all.

Still it does make me wonder when the Deragoth story will continue. After all no book returns to seven cities so they must have moved on somewhere

The next book is called "Toll the Hounds". If the Deragoth aren't at least mentioned in passing or appear in a flashback or two I'll be very surprised.

In the bone hunters i think Ddejim Nebrahl makes a comment on how cunning the master of the deragoth was. now was Dessimbelackis the master? cos i thought it was mentioned somewhere that he made a bargain with them. i don't remember anything bout him being their master.
And if so, who is the master of the deragoth and is he still around.
BTW, loony theory-> Dessimbelackis is the hounds of shadow! Mwah haha! D'ivers!
This is why Paran is almost but not quite a soletaken hound, as he only came in contact with a part of a full soul, one seventh in fact.

Dessim perhaps being the Hounds of Shadow isn't such a crazy theory, it's the most likely fate of the old emperor. We haven't heard of any other soletaken or d'ivers that could have been him...
