But... that's based on a book isn't it?

I think the book is based on the movie, Apt.

I don't know particularly about that, BUT, Die Hard was originally Commando 2. Arnold turned it down so they reworked it and made Die Hard,

Actually, Die Hard is based on a book from the 70s called "Nothing Lasts Forever."

whether or not the story was based on a book(and its not too farfetched that a book with a similar scenario occurred), it WAS supposed to be Commando 2.. That much has been established

Little Miss Sunshine.

I think more than five years ago, but I would have to say Memento and Magnolia as well.

And Kung Fu Hustle rocks.

And Shaun of the Dead IS way better than Hot Fuzz, which is in no way disparaging to Hot Fuzz, just saying that Shaun of the Dead is up there with other Ascendants of moviedom.

I think you need to be a brit or have a weird sense of humor to think Shaun of the dead or Hot Fuzz was THAT great.

They are both very british films, true enough. I don't think they're so indecipherable to non-brits though.

I loved both of those movies and I'm an American...

I actually like Shaun of the Dead a bit more than Hot fuzz.

Wasn't a huge fan of Run, Fatboy, Run though...

as an american, both of those movies translate extremely well here(perhaps since they spoof mostly american lead genres and you dont get much more american than point break) and both are extremely funny and very well put together films

I love the fact that even though the originator of this thread has said he doesn't mean to discount miovies based on books or stories you are all picking out the obscure origins of every film.

Churlish!

I enjoyed Sin City, not the best film I've seen but though it was excellently presented.

What Sin City, 300, Scanner Darkly have done reminds me somewhat of the impressionist movement. We have now got to a stage where we can recreate alomst anything we want with CGI (as happened with phots at the time of the impressionists making paitings that were very realistic less relevant as previously they had been attempts to genuinely capture images) and make it seem real so people are looking to present things that are stylistically different from merely representing reality.

Don't be silly, you know CGIs were created so that we could one day have Godzilla and Kingkong and Mecha-streisand fight to the death on the big screen.
