Ascendants vs. Gods

Hey everyone, I'm new here.
A question has been bugging me since I starting reading the series, and I still don't understand it.
What is the difference between Ascendants and Gods? Some people Ascend and become Gods, while others (Anomander Rake) don't seem at all Godly, and yet are listed under Ascendants in the Glossary...
Help?

Yeah, I'm not sure what book you're up to, Introspect, but if you're willing to brave spoilers for books beyond GotM, then this search results in a good amount of threads: http://goo.gl/17xedX [POSSIBLE SPOILERS ALL BOOKS]

I would venture that Introspect searched "ascendants vs gods" and that, since the title matched exactly, this thread was at the top.

What sorcery is this?
Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

Hey, kidding aside it's all good when old threads get necro'd instead of new redundant ones being started. Keeps the clutter down. Welcome and carry on!

Since the thread has been brought back to life, I guess somebody should actually bother to answer the question.
This is the GotM forum so I will try to keep the descriptions vague and stay away from later examples.
All gods are ascendants but not all ascendants are gods.
Ascendance simply means that the person, being or creature has surpassed their mortal limits and have become something more. With ascendancy comes practically unlimited potential if the will and drive is there.
The difference is worship. Ascendants who are worshipped become gods, this means that their power increases but also that their power and even free will becomes bound by certain aspects and even the expectations of their worshipers.
How ever some ascendants choose to reject their godhood. Anomander Rake is such a person. He does not want worship and he does not demand followers.

This is good to know. I've been on forums in the past where the exact opposite was encouraged, even enforced. Thread necromancy was seen as bad form and you'd get your hand slapped pretty good for doing so.

I would argue that there are gods who were never ascendants. But staying spoiler free is hard...

That makes no fucking sense. Aside from the entertainment in realizing it's an old thread it saves room on the forums.
Agreed. I've tried to understand it, and failed. Maybe the admins of such forums are non-ascendant God's? Or perhaps just a couple of guys who managed to sneak in the back door of an Azath house while the guardian was preoccupied?

I'd have to disagree that you can skip ascendancy on the way to being a god, just because someones state of being isn't described as ascendant before becoming a god, doesn't mean they aren't ascendants.

Do we know of any Ascendants who aren't fulfilling a role of the Deck of Dragons? I always figured people 'Ascended' to a role within Gods were entities who had been worshiped and likely ascended too?

Ascedants who are not working within the structures of the houses are called unaligned.
If they do not take up an existing mantle then they get a new card.
