But what REALLY pisses any restaurant worker off, more than low tipping or anything else, is the people who come in at 5 minutes to close and sit down. Sure, we're open, but you've just guaranteed that everyone will be staying at work at least an hour later just for YOU. I don't know why people never stop and consider this...

I've worked in service, and I used to do this at Outback. No one seemed to care much, since I tipped good and they had to stay around anyway to do tablework and such.

Well, sometimes we are drunk and hungry and couldn't care less and will tip well. Sometimes we are just really starving and will tip really well. Sometimes, there is a hobo stalking us and it prevents a violent crime from taking place.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Me too, though I hate working at them. Sometimes drunk people tip great, but sometimes they don't, and often they're a huge pain in the ass to wait on...not to mention messy, loud, obnoxious, and likely to puke all over your bathrooms. Or have sex in them.

As in all things, we are all unique. It has been my experience (and my friends and I have a sickening amount of this) that drunk people tend to tip the same way as a sober person would, only slightly more enhanced. Good service gets a slightly better tip, bad service gets a slightly worse tip.

Are we obnoxious? Every drunk person is obnoxious sometimes. Are we messy? Well, stupid people are. Are we likely to puke? Eh, that depends upon the experience level of the drinkers. If someone is drunk enough to puke, you usually have a reason to call the police on them before they throw up, and your problem is solved.

Heh, maybe I just have worked at the wrong restaurant all these years. The happy drunks are few and far between...

This is true. They are not afraid to hand you that dollar personally, and they will even wait around for you to thank them profusely for it...

What do you expect? They give their disposable to God. They ain't got jack for you hard-working restaurant employees.

Payment in exchange for sexual use of your body constitutes prostitution, not tipping.

As brood points out, not if it is only the tip.

Italians seem to go to extremes - today, we had one who left a £30 tip for a £25 meal, and a group who didn't leave a single thing despite ordering 15 meals at once and spending over £100...

the 30 on 25 was drunk and the group of 15 meals were typical euro trash.

I'm fairly sure they just couldn't tell the difference between a £20 and £50 note... still, their loss, not like it's difficult to do, lol.

Well, being that they're different colours, sizes, have different pictures, and have different numbers written in big bold type on them, no. :)

Saw a case on the news recently about this; apparently at the Hard Rock cafe (one of them) in London, employees were having their pay put to minimum levels through tip distribution, and this was ruled illegal. So now we know for sure we get paid plus tipped, even when sneaky American firms try and come in with their unfair underhanded tactics. :) :)

Well yes, the frankly scandalous idea that you can undercut minimum wage and expect the customer to make it up in tips has been ruled illegal.

We're having tons of Europeans coming to the hotel advantage of the weak dollar.

Alas, my employees report the tips are just as weak :)

Oh, they'll be going up anyway, thanks to the recession caused in part by the US sub-prime scandal.:)
