How powerful is Rel? Is he essentiallly channeling raw and unchecked amounts of Mael's power?

I don't mean neccessarily raw magical power - I mean, he hasn't shown too much of that so far, but more political, and the amount of back-up he can call on, which seems significant.

All I remember is that he was able to interfere w/ warren usage using Ruse (both Quick and not-apsalar say something or other about ruse making it hard to move around IIRC). I don't think it's explicitly stated that that was Rel, but...Ruse is an ocean-related warren that's been used by Mael and I'm pretty sure either Rel or the empress told t'avore to keep Quick from doing anything.

Other than that I'm not sure if we've seen him doing anything magical.

in DG Rel stands on the Aren walls and kills the crows coming for Coltains soul en masse...I just get the feeling he's pretty powerful

He's not standing on the Aren walls, don't be silly :(

Mallick Rel is among the dogslayers on the plains. The good guys are standing on the walls watching powerless to save Coltain.

By the way, is it really Rel that shoots the crows out of the sky? Wasn't it Kamist Reloe?

EDIT: It's Reloe, p. 855 HoC

Kamist Reloe stood on the platform, Karbolo Dom at his side. Sorcery blossomed - ...]

Further down.

Kamist Reloe obliterated hundreds more.

It doesn't take too much power killing crows.

They're just crows...and presumably not invested with any of coltaine's power yet. I mean we're not talking about seer's condors or those ravens who are with rake (what's the mom's name again?).

No, I don't think that's right. Coltaine was killed before Pormqual marched the army out, and Rel was still in Aren with him.

Don't have any quotes that he was on the wall, but I guess it's possible. But I am almost completely sure he was not back with the dogslayers yet.

He wasn't.
When Duiker runs up the wall to smack some sense into Pormquall, he sees Rel chilling there...

DG mmpb, pg851
"Three figures stood at hte outer wall. The one on the left Duiker recognised as Mallick Rel--the adviserhe had last seen in Hissar - his silks billowing in the hot wind. The man beside him was probably High Fist Pormquall, tall, wiry, slump-shouldered and wearing clothes that would beggar a king, his pale hands, skittering across the battlement like trapped birds."

It's wickan crows goddammitt! Very hard to kill indeed, however it was Kamist Reloe that killed them, not Rel. My bad.

OK, I am just being a nitpicking bastard now but how do we even know there's such thing as a "Wickan Crow." I know there are wickans who are members of the crow clan but...not anything about tough to kill wickan crows, or anything indicating these aren't just crows.

Quote

i·ro·ny1 /ˈaɪrəni, ˈaɪər-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -nies.
1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
2. Literature.
a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.
b. (esp. in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., esp. as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
3. Socratic irony.
4. dramatic irony.
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
6. the incongruity of this.
7. an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.
8. an objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality, etc.
[Origin: 1495–1505; < L īrōnīa < Gk eirōneía dissimulation, sarcasm, understatement, equiv. to eírōn a dissembler + -eia -y3]

—Synonyms 1, 2. Irony, sarcasm, satire indicate mockery of something or someone. The essential feature of irony is the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression and the context in which it occurs. In the figure of speech, emphasis is placed on the opposition between the literal and intended meaning of a statement; one thing is said and its opposite implied, as in the comment, “Beautiful weather, isn't it?” made when it is raining or nasty. Ironic literature exploits, in addition to the rhetorical figure, such devices as character development, situation, and plot to stress the paradoxical nature of reality or the contrast between an ideal and actual condition, set of circumstances, etc., frequently in such a way as to stress the absurdity present in the contradiction between substance and form. Irony differs from sarcasm in greater subtlety and wit. In sarcasm ridicule or mockery is used harshly, often crudely and contemptuously, for destructive purposes. It may be used in an indirect manner, and have the form of irony, as in “What a fine musician you turned out to be!” or it may be used in the form of a direct statement, “You couldn't play one piece correctly if you had two assistants.” The distinctive quality of sarcasm is present in the spoken word and manifested chiefly by vocal inflection, whereas satire and irony, arising originally as literary and rhetorical forms, are exhibited in the organization or structuring of either language or literary material. Satire usually implies the use of irony or sarcasm for censorious or critical purposes and is often directed at public figures or institutions, conventional behavior, political situations, etc.
