Hello! I'm new to this site and SE in general. I tore through GotM and have started the second book already. I think I may of tore through it a bit too fast though.

I must've missed the entire dealings of Coll. Who was he? Why was he so important to the story and within the story as a major player? Any other useful information regarding Coll?

Thanks in advance. You guys have a great thing going here. Keep up all the great work.

Coll was a noble in Darujhistan once, but Sinital married him, then took away his estates and made him a punch drunk bum.

Murillio (another noble) and Rallick Nom (the assassin) then swore vengeance on Sinital and plotted to restore Coll to his estate, and to take down Sinital.

Said plot climaxed at the fateful... er... fete Sinital hosted when Rallick Nom took out Turbann Orr (who was Sinital's big political support) and Murillio depressed her into suicide.

Coll is now back in the higher echelons of power, and in MOI (spoilers)

[spoiler
]was part of the Daru delegation that met with Caladan Brood, Whiskeyjack, Anomander Rake, Dujek and all the rest[
/spoiler]

Thank you!

Does this house that came up out of the ground in Darujhistan have anything to do with him?

Thanks. I haven't been this enthralled with a series since Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow, Thorn.

I'll be sticking around here for a while. Already spent the entire morning on the site.

That's how it starts, soon you'll never be able to leave.

I orginally thought this thread was about the crimson guard mage. What was his name? Corlo? no that's not right... It's the guy that is looking on as blues I think makes shish kebab out of the adjunct.

Cowl?
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I didn't know what to think of Lorn. Actually, I didn't know what to think of about 90% of the characters in those books. Who's the bad guy? Who are the good guys? Was Rake bad because there were some moments when I thought to myself "Hm. I'd like to sit down and have a beer with this guy."

That scene where Lorn trots off from the company of Tool to be alone and she started crying...DAMN! Just when I was starting to hate the bitch for what she was doing she goes and cries and mourns the loss of life in the war!?

WHY, SE, why must you do that!

There aren't really good or bad characters. They're people with motivations and suchlike, so are almost entirely grey, not black and white:)

To elaborate on Skywalkers reply -

Coll figures in the wider scheme of things in an important respect. As a high-ranking noble, he is entitled to (and formerly held) a Town Council seat.

Baruk makes it clear at one point that there are those in the city (i.e. everyone who hates Turban Orr) who want Coll's voice heard once more in the Council. So there were more people invested in his return to power than just Murillio and Rallick Nom.

Coll's also best pals with Paran and the other Bridgeburners he met, which can't be bad for Darujhistan-Malazan rebel army relations.

Just wanted to chime in to say Coll was one of my favorite characters, especially the meeting he and Paran have.
