Turns out it might just be Waterstone's, not an employee at a specific branch. Went to another one and it looks like they've all started stocking books from Night Shade Press along with a few other imports. I picked up:

The Chains That You Refuse, Elizabeth Bear
Read the first story, was a bit confusing at first, but it all snapped together at the end and I found I liked it a lot.

I didn't buy it, instead I got an email from Patrick that I won it, after that contest on his blog... Still, looking forward to it :-) Hopefully it arrives just after I finish Thud!

Actually, I bought three.

1) Pregnancy diary for my woman - so yeah, now you know :-)
2) Iron Council by China Mieville
3) Night Watch by Terry Pratchett

It's my first Pratchett book, I bought so it better be good. (I did read Good omens a few years ago, I loved it)

Night Watch is a decent one to start with, because although there is a lot of backstory to Vimes et al., it isn't quite as prominent. I would still recommend that you start with Guards, Guards! though, as that is the first in the City Watch Sequence.

Book I borrowed today (from the library):

The Thousandfold Thought by R. Scott Bakker.

OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I have read The Night Watch in Russian (as well as other 3 books). If translation is good, then you are going to like the book. It is much better than the movie. In fact, I didn't like the movie. IMHO, it was a clumsy attempt by Russians to say they can make movies in the same style and quality like Hollywood and they failed, utterly.

Glen Cook - Black Company books are superb.

This one - # Shadow & Claw: The First Half of the Book of the New Sun : The Shadow of the Torturer/the Claw of the Conciliator (Wolfe, Gene. Book of the New Sun, V. 1-2.) - Gene Wolfe - is on its way from the UK amazon to my home as well :p I bought only the first part for starters.

I just bought Guards! Guards!, Men at arms, and Feet of Clay. Well, actually, I bought it on Monday, and it arrived here on Friday. Yay! Cheers for Amazon.co.uk. I bought the books with the black, cool looking cover. I did not quite like the original covers.

A Void by Georges Perec; which is the English translation of La Disparition

The interesting thing about this book is that, apparently, neither the original text or the translation contain the letter "e"...
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

1966 and All That by Craig Brown.

1066 and All That was one of my favourites, and hopefully this will induce a similar amount of sidesplitting...especially those Test Papers. They are hilarious!

I recently made my monthly book purchase and I'm pretty psyched about it:

1) Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb
2) Prince of Nothing Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker
3) first three books of the Black Company (The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and The White Rose) by Glen Cook
4) In the Eye of Heaven by David Keck

won't get through all of them in a month but 6-7ish weeks or so ought to be good. Sweet.
