was out looking for a birthday gift for a friend.
Also picked up some series sequels for myself:
Charles Stross - The Annihilation Score - the next Laundry files book in mmpb
Django Wexler - The Price of Valor - the next Shadow Campaigns book in mmpb
Mark Lawrence - The Liar's Key - the next Broken Empire book in mmpb
Stephen Hunt - Foul tides Turning - the next Far Called book.
Wexler is good. Very very good.
I've read a few comments that the relationship between the two girls plays a too large role in later books, in detriment of some other things like action, the role of that mysterious general and such. Now, I don't mind a bit of romance and/or sex, but I'm not much into lots of emo girl stuff, either. How well is it balanced?
I'm 38% of the way through book 1 (gotta love the Kindle's progress indicator), there's some decent action, nice gradual reveal of POV character back stories, some world building, etc. I've found it pacing really well and there isn't really a POV character that I'm irritated to see (cough Martin and Jordan cough). I'm having a lot of fun, so far. Reminds me of Cornwell's Sharpe series, but less "Men's Romance."
“The others followed, and found themselves in a small, stuffy basement, which would have been damp, smelly, close, and dark, were it not, in fact, well-lit, which prevented it from being dark.”
