I'll try the first of each anyway.
I'm glad my dads reading more these days and is open to reading a bit of fantasy, for years all he read was clive cussler, lee child and wilbur smith. The sharpe books years ago.
He picked up abercrombies The Blade Itself off my shelf one day the westher was awful and he was bored and loved it so Ive been trying to give him what I have that isnt too heavy on the dragony type fantasy. He's read all abercrombies, just finished the Troy trilogy, gave him The Straight Razor Cure to see what he makes of it then going to hand him Legend

My dad has similar tastes - I'll give him The Blade Itself to try out!

Or the shattered sea trilogy. It's zero magic but still in the style, could be a good break in

How do you shatter a sea without magic?

Enjoy! Looks like the third ebook is still 99 cents over at Inkshares, but I don't know how long that'll last. (It was supposed to be until DragonCon, but I think that's over now...)
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Decided to make myself a present. Ordered the remaining 3 books of Moorcock's "Colonel Pyat Quartet" from Book depository.

It helps that my bosses gave me another pre-paid gift card to spend....

I've read a few comments that the relationship between the two girls plays a too large role in later books, in detriment of some other things like action, the role of that mysterious general and such. Now, I don't mind a bit of romance and/or sex, but I'm not much into lots of emo girl stuff, either. How well is it balanced?

That's a complaint? The relationships are very much in the background imo, only winter and Jane's is brought to the front as it's integral to the plot really. On the sex front, it's not really an issue, there is very little of it imo, certainly nothing like what Morgan and others throw at you.

I read books 1 and 2 and really enjoyed them. I'm still waiting for the Dragon Arcana to be released for the Kindle.

It was used in the way of complaint in a few reviews I read. I take reviews with a big grain of salt, but since too much emo stuff is an issue for me, I wanted to make sure it is balanced with other things like plot, action, and such. Maybe those reviews were by boys who don't want girl cooties in their fiction at all. :p

BELGRAVIA by Julian Fellowes....because there is no DOWNTON on TV anymore...and his new show isn't out yet....so I needed a Fellowes fix. This looks like a splendid read.

I'm 38% of the way through book 1 (gotta love the Kindle's progress indicator), there's some decent action, nice gradual reveal of POV character back stories, some world building, etc. I've found it pacing really well and there isn't really a POV character that I'm irritated to see (cough Martin and Jordan cough). I'm having a lot of fun, so far. Reminds me of Cornwell's Sharpe series, but less "Men's Romance." :p

read 'em a while back. VERY heavy musketeers influence (I think a few show up now and again), but from the traditional "bad guys' " side. Except there's also dragons and crazy demon-magic.

I liked, but wouldn't really re-read unless I was feeling really randomly into that particular setting again.
