I tried to limit my book-buyin this year until I finish the books I currently own that I haven't read yet.

The project was going pretty well for several months, but I ended up on a work trip with a book I almost finished on my way there, and a 5+ hour return bus ride.

So I popped into a Chapters in Sudbury and picked up two books in series I've been reading that finally went mmpb:

-"Infinity Engine", the conclusion to Neal Asher's
Transformations] trilogy
-"Magic Triumphs", the nest Kate Daniels novel.

It is the plan for this weekend that I along with my Auntie and Unkie we ll be hitting the asphalt in search of garage sales. Fingers crossed the weather is fair Friday and Saturday mornings and that also we can find some good musty smelling yellow tinged picks.

Garage-sale finds are the best finds! Let us know how it goes.

Because I've been doing so good with cleaning up my backlog, I picked up volume 3s in the 2 series I planned to finish this year

"The Tyrant's Law" from the Dagger and Coin
"The Dread Wyrm" from the Traitor Son Cycle

Michael J. Sullivan's latest Kickstarter for the next First Empire book AGE OF DEATH is live! (also, it's been live for 8 minutes so far and is halfway funded already. LOL!

I thankfully nabbed an early bird pledge this time (with the last book I missed out on the early birds as they went QUICK). WooHoo!

EDIT: Bam. 100% Funded in 25minutes.

I was finding the level of hype around Tamsyn Muir's upcoming GIDEON THE NINTH kind of offputting. Throw in 'first in a new series' and i'm typically out. Yes, 'Lesbian swordmaster necromancers in space' is all well and good but i try not to jump into new series' with so many already hanging in the TRPFH, mostly because of you jerks this forum.

Then Charlie Stross, VE Schwab and more or less just now frikkin Warren Ellis all praised it.

So.... fuck. Pre-ordered.

since it's finally out in MMPB, I picked up "Oathbringer". Time to see for myself if Branderson pulled an MoI with his third doorstopper.

Also grabbed the second Chronicles of the Long War book, "The Dark Blood" since I was in an Indigo in a different part of the city that actually had Book 2, whilst my local one didn't.

Ole Sandy could never hope to achieve MoI. The sheer lack of quality on Walk of Kings proves this.

I genuinely enjoy Brandon's work, but MoI.... that's setting the bar way WAY too high. If i really, REALLY stretch my brain i can name maybe three books that were the MoI's of their respective series' (that is to say a single book in a solid series that utterly knocks everything out of the park, takes the reader to some dark hopeless places yet manages to end on an up-note, AND turns a bunch of genre tropes sideways)...

Bakker's UNHOLY CONSULT, Brown's DARK AGE, GRRM's STORM OF SWORDS, King's WOLVES OF THE CALLA ... that's all i got and those might be a subjective stretch.

It's been hyped up for so long that over a month ago I saw it pop up again on Twitter and was amazed it wasn't actually out yet. (I'm defo interested, though; if it pops up on sale for Kindle I'm grabbing it without a second thought.)
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Bakker's UNHOLY CONSULT, Brown's DARK AGE, GRRM's STORM OF SWORDS, King's WOLVES OF THE CALLA ... that's all i got and those might be a subjective stretch.

MoI was a turning point for me where I went from "I'll get the next book from the library whenever it's available" to "I need these books on my shelves NOW". It was pretty much single-handedly responsible for me starting to buy books- I went out to pick up all the Malaz books (up to tBH at the time) and also grabbed the ASoIaF trilogy- and that was the start of my library that over a decade later necessitated a custom-built bookshelf.

MoI was the first time when I felt that SE has enough stuff in Malaz world to actually make a 10 book series work. We got the Edur, the CG, Draconus saying that Dragnipur must be broken- basically most of the main threads were established in MoI, with a few more coming in in HoC (like the OD)
With Stormlight, after 2 major doorstoppers, I still don't feel like there's enough for such a huge series. And so I remain uncommitted, perfectly happy to wait over a year after release to buy the next volume.
I am waiting for Sanderson to convince me on the viability of the series, the way SE did, or the way Tchaikovsky did eventually with "Shadows of the Apt". I like long epics, but I want to feel that the plot is going somewhere suitably "epic". With Stormlight, after 2 books I'm not seeing the big picture yet.

After one book I could tell you he's hopelessly out of his depth. He should stick to short, punchy books rather than gargantuan tomes, because it's been evidenced that long books are far past his chops. Never before has a book been so thoroughly and offensively boring.

That's your wrong opinion and you're entitled to be wrong in it and then sprayed with wrongspray.

I've read his shorter stuff and found it entirely too facile in plot and character, and lacking the development and sheer impact his doorstoppers have and thus you are wrongiest of wrongers.

I enjoy just about everything Sanderson has had to offer. I do think that Words of Radiance is his best work, but with Oathbringer he got a little carried away with the bloat. I guess he's more consistent with his shorter works, but Stormlight reaches higher highs.

Way of Kings was a slog with eventual payoff.

Words of Radiance was slighly less of a slog with several action moments spaced out better, but some extremely annoying character moves. It gave glimpses of more extensive world-building, but failed to convince me.

Oathbringer is..... ? (we'll see once I get to it)
