Die Herren der grünen Insel by Kiera Brennan and Die fremde Königin by Rebecca Gablé.

I rarely read German historical fiction these days, so I remedied that. I've read a number of books by Gablé; they're solidly researched and an easy read She moved to 10th century Germany after a series of books set during the War of the Roses and the Tudors. Die Herren der grünen Insel is sold as ASOIAF meets Gabaldon, set during the conquest of Ireland by Henry II, so it could be fun.

I picked up this clutch of dollar books today at the newly reinstated Stuytown Flea Market in Manhattan.

Does anyone have anything to say about any of these? I got Lonesome Dove because of the accolades it got in the Reading At T'Moment thread a few months ago. The Gripping Hand was a no-brainer, as I've already read Mote in God's Eye. And, of course, many people love Ready Player One (which I now realize I may already own a copy of on my TRP).

While I haven't read it, I know that Have Space Suit — Will Travel is a classic. And Stars In My Pocket Like Grains of Sand sounded vaguely like something I'd heard good things about before, and I know people generally like Delany.

Thoughts on the others? Especially the Jane Lindskold, and these specific Vance and KSR books.

I've read the Delaney and it is indeed good. It's a little dry, not a page-turner, but it's got a lot of interesting ideas. Can't comment on the ones you mention last, except to say that those old sci-fi paperbacks are worth $1 just for the covers.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Vance's TO LIVE FOREVER did absolutely nothing for me.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch

HAVE SPACESUIT is justifiably a classic. RP1 is worth reading just to see what the hype is about, but I really enjoyed it.

Gripping Hand isn't half as good as Mote but it's still a decent read

There is a used bookseller very close to me here on Long Island. He has a huge assortment of old Science Fiction and Fantasy paperbacks, and most of it is in incredibly good condition, but he wants a minimum of $6.50 per volume.

Holy hell. They're books, not Elvis commemorative plates.

I have Lord Foul's Bane on my TRP, so couldn't resist completing the set. After all the praise I've seen it receiving in the Reading At T'Moment thread, I had to grab Shogun. And I've never read any Moorcock, so figured why not. Same for Brust. I've heard Earthsea is one of Le Guin's more adolescent works, but she's such a great author and I liked the Ghibli film. And I'll always buy Pratchett.

Ooh. Enjoy that one sir! Just remember to go into it with an open mind as it's a very different type of book than is usually recommended on here.

Also, I bought a digital copy of The Urth of the New Sun today because I realized that the only way I'm actually finishing books in a reasonable amount of time these days is if they're on my kobo.

I just flipped through it and it certainly feels very different.

I agree entirely about the digital stuff - I do most of my reading through ebooks and have very selective physical copies due to the huge amount of time I spend outside.

Was browsing audible and saw Vandermeer has a new book: Borne. Immediately bought it and I'll start it tomorrow.

I found THE EMPTY THRONE, WARRIORS OF THE STORM and THE FLAME BEARER, the latest three books in the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. I found them all in the charity shop near my house. They are all hardback copies. I paid the princely sum of £2 (which is $2.57 or CA$3.54 or AU$3.50 or EUR2.50) for all three (yup, for all three, not each...) I am quite chuffed with these findings.

I had up to THE DEATH OF KINGS previously, so I just need THE PAGAN LORD to complete my collection - for whatever reason, I never bought that one when it came out and I got left behind by the rate of his writing and all the other stuff I have been reading...

I think a reread is in order!

The inside of the back cover of the used copy of A Wizard of Earthsea that I purchased at a tag sale, which I mentioned up-thread.

This is the sort of fun stuff that you can't get with a new book or an ebook.

Are those any good? I've seen pretty mixed reviews.

The first one isn't that good. Afterward they pick up pretty quickly. I look at them like I look at Sabaton - cheesy, predictable, but enjoyable for it.
