Bought myself Dimtry Glukhovesky's Metro 2033 and Abrahams The Kings blood yesterday and i was wondering if Promise of Blood (The Powder Mage Trilogy): Brian McClellan is worth the money?

Got a hard copy of Blood & Bone, and bought American Elsewhere thanks to the praise from I think Salt-Man Z, as it sounds pretty neat.

Loaded up on a bunch of books for the kids at HPB and saw FIRST KING OF SHANNARA. Well...why the hell not? Threw it on the stack.

I have it too...it's REALLY fucking dense at points...but it's also one of those books that once you properly get into the thick of it...it's pretty damned amazing throughout. I wasn't actually expecting to like it as much as I did when I finally got around to reading it. Well deserved hype.

I have been unable to read anything for ages. Havnt done a full series reread of Malaz since I read Blood and Bone, which is still the only Malazan book I havnt immediately read then immediately started to reread btw. Anyway I have new books to get me back into the swing of things for a reread.

American Gods- Did an all dayer on it and while alot of the plot twists were very easily spotted still very much enjoyable and a very good book.

I felt physically ill and sorry for shadow when he was hearing laura talk about her affair with robbie and how they died while she was giving him a thank you bj. I think its because she wasnt trying to hurt him as she was dead by this point but just the flat nature of it really made me feel weird.

World War Z- Got this yesterday and going to start reading it later. i spoiled myself a bit reading about it online ages ago but other than that im looking forward to it.

Im sure both of these things are being turned into series/films though so I better read them quick or lose the 'I read the book well before the film' superiority

Indeed, that's a subtle knife twist in the gut that I didn't know Gaiman was capable of. It's a VERY dark thing to have Shadow go through. It's probably one of the most uncomfortable, and yet seemingly innocuous parts of that book.

In a war with gods and all sorts of weird and wonderful characters you see shadow whos pretty much a loveable dumb brute in some ways, take on board what his wife is saying. His wife is the reason hes in prison and is responsible for keeping him going throughout it but when you get her POV and shes talking about fucking the other guy and it being really good and shadows like ' I didnt need to hear that'. Horrible stuff

CITY OF PEARL - Karen Traviss (This means I can finally start reading the Wess'Har series (which comes highly recco'ed by Salt-Man! I had already bought the 2nd book a while back, but didn't want to start in the middle)

FORTRESS DRACONIS - Michael A. Stackpole (I've been eyeing this one for a few years now...and at $2 I couldn't pass it up)

MOSSFLOWER - Brian Jacques (the 3rd in his Redwall series)

Read it and enjoy, I found it THOROUGHLY entertaining, and a pleasant change from the norm for fantasy (a la magic = No gunpowder. Sweeping generalisation but you can't deny it happens)

At root that's an entirely fair critique. I just thought Stackpole did a fun job with it.

Indeed and I think if I'd read it years ago, I'd share that notion. So it's probably a "you need to read it at a certain time" kind of thing.

Me too! Some short stories were better than others, but all in all... it was a good read!

Went to the Book Exchange shop in Amsterdam this afternoon (I can recommend it if you're visiting A'dam! Lots of cheap 2nd hand english books in all genre's + non-fiction) and bought:

JIM BUTCHER -- Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera I)
FELIX GILMAN -- Thunderer
PAUL KEARNEY -- The Ten Thousand
PAUL KEARNEY -- Corvus

The latter two said on the front: "One of the very best writers of fantasy around -- Steven Erikson", so I obviously had to buy them. The other two I bought because of recommendations from this selfsame board. Started Thunderer right away.

The Rook by Daniel O'Malley - a cursory inspection of which shows that, speaking as an actual Brit, the author has no command (or perhaps knowledge) of British idiomatic speech whatsoever (which is a criticism I could fruitfully aim at The Milkweed Tryptych too) :S
Ghost Spin by Chris Moriarty - I've been waiting for this to be published for quite a few years now
Wolfhound Century by Peter Higgins - which looks to be a great deal of fun
Abaddon's Gate by James SA Corey - which, yet again, leads me to wonder how those two came up with that nom de plume; it's not an anagram...
