Found Dave (Farland) Wolverton's Beyond the Gate and Lords of the Seventh Swarm at Half Price Books yesterday. They're sequels to The Golden Queen, which I had read a number of years ago and enjoyed.

Also got the third book of Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of Seven Suns off the clearance rack for $1. I've picked up three of that series' books this way thus far.

Sapkowski's Witcher: The Last Wish. Neat colection of short stories.
Tho i found the sequel Blood of Elves to be disappointing.

Are those Kevin J Anderson books worth even the $1 and the investment of my reading time?? Having suffered through his exposition of Frank Herbert's notes (i refuse to consider them true novels in the Dune tradition), i can't bring myself to read any of his books.

I can't say. I think Apt did a review of them a long time ago saying they were okay, if nothing special. I can't pass them up for only a buck, though, since I've got some of them already. Will I ever read them is another question altogether; I own 5 KJA Dune books that I haven't read and doubt I ever will.

Does anyone know if those "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter" are any good?
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Wait....you haven't finished ALERA yet?!

Dude! Get on that! PRINCEP'S FURY has a chapter ending in the second half of the book that made my jaw drop and break on the floor. SOOOOO good! Not to mention FIRST LORD'S FURY is a balls out, non-stop thrill ride to the finish. Man, what I wouldn't give to be in your shoes with still two books to go.

As for me, I got an Amazon.ca package today! In it I recieved brand spankery new copies of THE WINDUP GIRL by Paolo Bacigalupi and CROWN CONSPIRACY, AVEMPARTHA, and NYPHRON RISING by Michael J. Sullivan...super excited!

That and SIDE JOBS comes out on Tuesday...the day before I start my new job! Excelsior!

Also, I know not of this Peter Hamilton fellow...should I jump on the bandwagon?

Ta.

Peter F Hamilton writes 'space opera' crossed with 'mid sf' (wouldn't call it hard sf), that is surprisingly readable. Generally well-paced and some really cool plots and characters. His use of tech doesn't break your head - he tends to fit it into the story better than most rather than hit you in the face with it. Go check out Werts reviews for a quick intro. I was avoiding buying any more books as I'm moving interstate soon and didn't want to have to pack extra, but a good condition copy secondhand was too good to resist.

Of course you may ask what was I doing in a secondhand bookstore when I wasn't going to buy any more books and I would reply that it was a good question. :)

Re: Hamilton -- there's also the earth-based local detective-cum-special-ops series that starts with Mindstar Rising. Great characters, and a cool vision of a near-future earth after calamitous climate change.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

That was sort of the point - i want to read the series in one fell swoop. I want the sort of buzz i got from reading the first seven Dresden books in a row.
I get the last two mmpbs with SIDE JOBS and then voila!

Found William Shatner's Shadow Planet at Half Price Books today. I've got most of his Quest For Tomorrow series now, only missing one book. I also received the Swords & Dark Magic anthology from The Book Depository. Looking forward to reading this one, big-time.

birthday shopping for me today:

I saw (and immideately grabbed) Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy in a boxed set.
Tchaikovsky's Shadow of the Apr, Book 4 *ignores Morgoth and Aptorian*
Janny Wurts "Wars of Light and Shadow", volume 3 "Warhost of Vastmark"--I'm not sure if I like the series, yet, but I have made the error of buying volume 4 first,t ehn I bought and read volumes 1 and 2, and now, welll, I have to read 3, and then 4, since it's already in my posession.

also grabbed Ken Scholes' "Canticle", because I absolutely loved "Lamentation"

Only qustion becomes when will I ever have time to read any of these.....

Hopefully; never ;)

Just bought the Ten Thousand by Paul Kearney...I've heard good things and it has an Erikson endorsement on the cover so I was sold.

I almost bought the Gunslinger, or whatever that first book in that King series is, but I had no idea how long the series was and wasn't sure if I wanted to get dragged into a long one. Can anyone help explain it to me, because the concept (as far as I understand it) intrigues me.

I recently ordered four books.

R. Scott Bakker - The Darkness That Comes Before
China Mieville - The Scar
Robin Hobb - Assassin's Apprentice
SL Farrell - A Magic of Twilight

I'm about 99% sure I'm going to start with The Darkness That Comes Before. Although I'm afraid that I'm going to fall balls deep into that shit and order the rest of the trilogy and not read the other three books I ordered. : /

A word about Hamilton beyond what's already been said: he may actually have written the worst sex scenes I've ever read. I'm not a particular connoissieur of such things, but OH MY GOD MAKE IT STOP!!!

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell
