I'm in the middle of my second complete readthrough of the series, and I'm finding it extremely more enlightening than the first time through.

But one thing I thought never really resolved itself was Buke's story. Unless I missed something, it seems he kinda "flew the coop" (pun intended) after K'Rul's gift and his spying on Korbal Broach and Bauchelain.

What happened to Buke? Or is this just something that hasn't been resolved yet (hello, Toll the Hounds)?

I think Buke flew off into the sunset basically... K'rul gave him the soletaken instant mix clay, he hung around a bit, then off he went

Okay, then. I thought maybe I just missed something.

I wonder if Buke is going to end up in TtH somehow. This is a return to Genabackis, and with everything that happened to him in MoI it seems like this would be the time to continue his story.

It was my impression, and this is a very old memory, but I thought he let himself slip and become one with the hawk. Leaving his human pain behind him.

That does seem like a very Buke thing to do, but I certainly didn't get that impression reading the text.

I thought it was his mission to monitor Bauchelain & Korbal Broach. We've got no reason to think that he's not still doing so.

As for why he has not reappeared - have Bauchelain & Korbal Broach? No.

There's a POV from the hawk that was Buke near the end of the Capustan siege. It's basically him staying as far away from Capustan as possible, so his superior vision doesn't let him see all the cannibalism and other horrors going on, and then flying away into the sunset, free from all the pain and misery in his life etc. There's a line about Elder God's gifts, can't really remember it. But I think it's safe to say there's a bird of prey flying around with some strange memories of being a caravan guard.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

here's some extracts, it's page 714 for me, the very end of chapter 17

Quote

...

The sparrowhawk that had once been Buke heard no sound but the wind, lending the scene below a solemn, ethereal quality.

...

Wives, mothers, children. Burned-out buildings.
No closer.
Ever again.
The sparrowhawk caught an updraught, swept skyward, eyes now on the livening stars as night swallowed the world below.
There was pain in the gifts of Elder Gods.
But sometimes, there was mercy.

Hmm. Yep, viewed in that light, it's possible we'll never hear from Buke again.

But then again, Treach was lost to the animal side before regaining his humanity in time to ascend...

true enough, but Treach was a First Hero and acclaimed the (or a) "Lord of Battle" before he even ascended. He had skills even if he was insane. Whereas Buke is just a guy, with a sad story, but not very crucial to the progression of the world, so I wouldn't count on it...

Also Buke is A BIRD! he'll probably be eaten by a predator or shot by a hunter in a matter of months or years.

I think he disappeared. Erikson doesn't mention him anymore
