thats a good point, but i still wonder how such a huge empire was administrated. kellenved and dancer could not have handled it all themselves.

in fairness, i get the impression that there is at least some degree of similarity to the roman empire, in that Fists/ high fists have a huge degree of autonomous control in their region, mush like the regional governors of the Roman period.

having said that, travel/communication by means of magic also helps to put a limit on exactly how autonomous people get.

and then there's the Claws.....
meh. Link was dead :(

yeh i guess magical communication makes the distances a little less daunting.

its just some weird obsession i have with understanding a societies political structure.

A functioning bureaucracy does not require a democratic government. The Malazan Empire is as competently governed as any real world dictatorship/police state.

Read into that what you will.

Just to defend myself from the earlier stuff bout Tayschrenn
-The Elder Gods wanted to torment Kallor, they didint want to kill him. They wanted to deny him his heart's desire, Ascendancy.
-Tays seems to be predominantly a battle mage, fire is very destructive, so it would give him an advantage at destroying things...
Moon's Spawn is ancient. It was already damaged when Rake found it. I doubt he could have repaired it, so we can assume it was nowhere near its top capabilities.
- The Rat Catchers Guild are also very proficient in creating illusions. So is Quick Ben, as he showed in MoI and tBh when he made an illusionary Hold spell, which Bottle then bolstered with the Eres power....
I have no idea what he did in NoK (getting it for Christmas, yay), but I'm just saying that he doesnt seem quite the powerhouse he's made out to be.

I get the feeling that Kellanved assigned the Fists to deal with the day-to-day business of the Empire, as well. It seems to me like Surly would use the Imperial Warren to get places quickly if real administration was required.
