Michael Komarck has just sent us three additional rough illustrations for Steven Erikson’s Gardens of the Moon. Here’s one, from chapter two, for those interested. We expect finished versions of all of the art in just a few short weeks, at which point we’ll be hustling this book into production.

MAN THAT IS AWESOME!
I did expect Quick Ben to be darker than that though...and who is in the cloak?
Hairlock...ouch...just as I envisioned him

Thanks for posting it dude, I was gonna check later in the week. Early treat
I love how he's done Hairlock, and WJ is just epic win.

I assume cloak-guy is supposed to be Kalam. Apparently cloak = assassin.

Both QB and Kalam should be a lot darker. . .awesome, but slightly incorrect unless this authority comes from SE himself.

I should have a bigger version later today or tomorrow to post on the blog. Feel free to comment, as these are "rough" sketches.
Michael told me that the six sketches he's working on at the moment are all based on our suggestions of a few weeks back.

Yeah, looking closely at it--Kalam looks too similar to WJ for my visioning. I also wish Sorry was more in the foreground so we could actually see her. Lastly, I also wonder why Sail isn't in the pic.
Very polished tho...

That's so awesome he's actually using our suggestions.
Pat, is there anybody who can contact Komarck and let him know QB and Kalam are black skinned?

Very awesome. Hairlock is especially awesome.
I hope he'll be depicted in puppetform as well.
Kalam and Quick Ben are black... just to clarify that some more (rough sketches can be tweaked right?).

They seem....more Arabic in that picture.....I know Kalam has been described countless times as very dark....and QB is black as well....hopefully word will get back to Komarck.
I hope they don't reveal ALL the pictures that will be coming in the book....I like a little surprise.

I had usually pictured Quick as a darker than normal skinned Arab and Kalam as a slightly more darker skinned Arab person.

I've always seen them as black like Africans more than Arabs....though Kalam as the darker of the two.
I thought the Kundryl and other tribes of the southern continent of Seven Cities were more arabic in skin tone...but who the hell knows in this crazy, mixed up world?!

I finally got the chance to look at the picture on my screen at home (I posted from work yesterday). At first, I didn't even notice Kalam was in the picture since I was looking for a black guy. I've always pictured QB as east indian and Kalam as black.
It is an interesting question though. Has Komarck read all the books? Doubtful. Do you think this speaks to the lack of minority characters in fantasy series in general? (ie. did he assume they were light-skinned because that's the norm in fantasy)
Of course, if he's been getting briefed by SE, then it could have just been an oversight that can be easily fixed.

I thought Quick was the darker of the two, but not by much. Popular opinion seems to be arrayed against me on this one unfortunately.
I'm sure we can get this fixed

I saw the three sketches in question and they look great!
I've asked Bill if I can post the larger version of the Bridgeburners sketch. The two others are a no-no, however.
Just to make sure I won't receive a ton of PMs, I'll tell you that they depict Quick Ben and Kalam on the rooftops, and the rising of Tool...
