Awesome Pat!

I'm interested to see how he portrays a T'Lan Imass.

And anything with Kalam and QB in it has to be gold....

The bigger version of the Bridgeburners sketch has been posted on the blog! :p

It's beautiful, truly.

Looking at the mage more closely, that's how I'd imgined Tayschrenn to look....hmmm...

Awesome Pat, good work!

Agreed that is how I picture Tays as well...not Quick.

Their clothes are too fine - aren't they supposed to have just come from digging their way out of collapsed tunnels? Plus the clothes just look impractical for infantry - despite being a mage, an assassin and a former High Fist, their clothes should be a lot more soldier-y, don't you think?

[EDIT] I really am very impressed with Kormack's work though - my first thought was "This is a sketch?!?"

Wow, hadn't even picked up on the new pictures before now. Looks great.

I don't mind the color of skin so much. Kalam and Quick look arabic/middle eastern which is good enough for me.

Funny how Kalam seem more mage-like than Quick :p

Quick Ben reminds me of SE :p
And it seems Kalam does have dark skin in that pick. Dark enough anyway.
I take back my previous "critisism".
The leader, his audience still,
considered their scholarly will.
He lowered his head
and with anguish he said,
"But how will we teach them to kill?"

Just seen the art, as a piece of artwork it's pretty good, but I've yet to see a malazan piece of art which I haven't been able to spot something wrong with.

Major flaws, trees should be burned down, hairlock definitely wears a grey raincoat not robes, he is heavily scarred, quick and kalam should both be darker, and their clothes aren't particularly soldiery.

Oh and I'm pretty sure Kalam doesn't have a beard, but I can't find a quote for that.

that said I agree quick is very close to how I see tays, and it is a very nice picture.

I really like this picture – the Hairlock cut in half and the Bridgeburners standing above him.
As everyone says I imagined both Quick Ben and Kalam to be much darker skinned. I can blame this on the lightning – with the smoke and ash after battle everyone looks sort of grey-ish.

I however imagined Quick Ben to be skinnier. He is way too big and imposing in here. I know Erikson isn’t big on the description and you have to haunt for it but I remember him as high and gaunt.
Kalam is bigger, wider in shoulders – people are surprised he moves so smoothly and quietly.
I imagine QB as Tuareg and Kalam as darker– like people from Sahara: from Nigeria, Niger, Chad etc.
Just as Emperor and all Dal Honese people look like the sub-equatorial Africans in my mind.
For future refrence Toc the Younger is half-Dal Honese, half-Napan so he should be dark navy ;).

Oh, and the clothes are much too fine. I thing QB just wore black and others some dirty uniforms – just came out from the tunnels.

You right. This look would fit Tay much better.

Yeah, looking closely at it--Kalam looks too similar to WJ for my visioning. I also wish Sorry was more in the foreground so we could actually see her. Lastly, I also wonder why Sail isn't in the pic.

I like how there’s Sorry standing bit apart in the background – just like it was in the book.
I’m fine with lack of Tattersail – we see it from her perspective – through her eyes.

Still very, very pretty. And it’s just a sketch.

Stupidity doesn't hurt but it kills.

We should keep one thing in mind this just a sketch. I'm sure things will change in terms of characters look...but we should let him know that the clothing is incorrect and as someone pointed out they just had almost their entire unit killed you're really not going to be dressed that cleanly and sophisticated.

Generally, Quick and WJs outfit looks a lot more expensive than what a soldier, even an officer should be able to afford, let alone want to bring into combat. They look like a nobleborn and a high priest. Of course, Quick might be light fingered enough to get the coin, but he's never described as being particularly concerned about attire.

I think WJ's is fine, just dirty it up a bit - he's a former Fist, after all. He's gonna have good quality equipment, but worn down some.

I agree the current representation of QB would be a very good Tayschrenn (well, slightly different, but the face is pretty close).

Overall, they definitely need to be more dishevelled.

I can't believe I just spent £50 on a book. Only two things are making me feel better: spending £50 sounds way better than spending $100, and the fact that I can always persuade myself that, as it's a book, it's like spending on culture, right?!

Imagine if they did the whole series like this. Might as well put aside another £450 now. £450!!!! And then if they did ICE's novels as well, that could be another £250.....Ouch, it hurts to be addicted. Why can't they just give it to us for free, makes good business sense to me - a student pretending to be doing a PhD whilst sponging off the state.

Same. And then I'll go on about how I could probably sell it for twice that much, but I'd never, ever want to sell it.

For any Americans interested, Amazon.com is currently doing 37% off (the numbered edition, clearly;)) for pre-orders, taking it down to under $80. Don't forget to use the links at the top of the board!
