not a single word about the last ufc?

those were some great fights.

machida buried his opponent and cruises to a match with bones...I like machida, its going to be a shame to see him beaten again.

Sorry, bub. I do my MMA talking on another board and it sometimes slips my mind to bring some back over here.

It was a fun card, but Machida stomping Bader in the second was nearly a gimme. I was surprised Shogun cracked Vera open like that though. Thought for sure the separated shoulder, cracked collarbone and knee surgeries he'd had over the last year or so would show up (on top of the Hendo fight).

Also, I slot Lauzon/Varner in at the tail end of my Top 10 list.

Looking forwards to catching Bendo/Edgar - but tomorrow. I have a good friend of mine coming up from NYC and fighting for an amateur title in my town. Go, Matthew Maldonado!

He's a brown belt world champion who trains at Coban's and Alliance NYC, so I predict a little striking and then a takedown to submission inside 3 minutes.

was rooting for Bendo, but was really disappointed with the decision. Will have to rewatch it again, but I only had Bendo winning the first and MAYBE the third(I think it was the third). Henderson was fucking Frankie up with those kicks to the calf, then he just abandoned them, then started kicking high which Edgar almost always caught in the first fight. Very frustrating to watch.

Edgar is a little BEAST... I might like to see him drop to FW, but then you have to deal with Aldo...

I just don't want to see another immediate rematch.

mmajunkie is reporting that if GSP beats Condit, then a super-fight with Anderson Silva at 180 lbs would be next.

MM won the bout and title with a KO in the second round.

As for GSP/Anderson, I don't think it happens until next July or so - if it does. To be honest, I don't see Anderson dropping down to 180 without greater financial compensation than usual.

Frankie Edgar taking on Jose Aldo is bigger news in my book. That's going down at 153.

DVR'd the UFC fights last night, and got to watch them this morning. The main event between JONES and BELFORT was quite exciting. I thought it was just going to be a systematic beatdown like many of JONES' previous fight, but BELFORT threw a spanner in the works in the first round.
I won't say the result in case people haven't watched it yet.

The undercard fights were decent enough, but didn't really excite me like some previous undercards. I know I'm probably wrong on this (and I'll grant you he won the replay) but I couldn't get excited to see Demetrious Johnson fighting for the inaugural world flyweight title, cos I firmly believe he lost to McCAll in the first semi-final and got away with it because of the weird scorecard thing, and the failure to have the extra round. Had no opinion on Benevidez so wasn't really bothered about the fight.

Was interesting to finally get a chance to see BISPING fight since i've only ever seen quotes by him insulting opponents. His fight with BRIAN STANN was close, but I can't see either of those guys actually threatening a world champion. Stann might be able to catch you with a haymaker and knock you out, and Bisping could wear you down and grind out a close victory, but against a truly world class opponent I'd see both falling short.

The first fight up between SWANSON and OLIVEIRA had a very impressive knockout. Great to see a fighter thinking his punching strategy out, landing a beauty of a body punch and then faking another to bring the guard down and landing a massive shot to the head. Good start to the night's viewing.

I was on my feet when Belfort sunk in that armbar. I'm not a Jones hater but damn that would have been awesome for Belfort to get the upset. And no, neither Stann nor Bisping would challenge Silva. They would have a punches chance at best.

That armbar would have been the craziest thing to happen in MMA for a long, long time. Perhaps even bigger than the Serra/GSP KO. My friend and I were up on our feet yelling - or staring super-intensely at the screen in his case.

Vinny's armbar was spectacular though. Hang on a bit and I'll link to a breakdown I am writing now of it.

The breakdown. If you click (G) it should give you a gif. I know some of them are really small, but it's Photobucket's work. I'm figuring out how to reverse this or get the images/GIFs bigger.

UFC 153. Anderson "The Spider" Sliva prevails yet again. The most technical fight was Nogueira v. Herman. I rather enjoyed that fight. Posted Image

Most technical for me was Jon Fitch/Erick Silva. What they were doing was high level stuff at pretty much every moment. And it got Fight of the Night too!

Anderson is absurd. How is MMA so easy for him?

This might be the second or third best card of the year. I rank UFC Japan on top, as that was top to bottom one of the very finest MMA events ever, and UFC Rio (142) as second or third. UFC 148 (Silva/Sonnen II) as fourth. Fox 4 (Shogun/Vera, Machida/Bader, Lauzon/Varner) as fifth.

Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen are coaching opposite each other (obviously) on "the Ultimate Fighter 17" and will be fighting April 27th. Ridiculous. Aside from running his mouth and drawing lots of PPV buys, how the fuck does Sonnen deserve to fight for the title? I actually like Sonnen as a fighter (not so much as a comic) but to give him this fight sets the precedent of title shot without merit if greed the numbers back it.

I absolutely agree. Sonnen last fought at 205 in 2005 and his biggest/best win in the division was Jason Lambert in 2003. Furthermore, he's coming off a KO loss in the first round to Anderson Silva.

At least when Hendo came in and got two straight title shots, he was carrying two PRIDE belts and lost a close decision to Quinton Jackson for the unified belt. Sonnen has his trash-talkin' mouth and a bunch of good wins at 185 combined with some bad losses. That's it.

Bookmarked that breakdown to link to people as an example of how crazy technical MMA is. Fantastic.

I and several others have written many similar breakdowns of striking, clinchwork and grappling under the title of "Judo Chop". I do mostly grappling stuff, as that's what I know.

I wrote one today on Big Nog's armbar, which I really like: http://www.bloodyelb...man-big-nog-rio

If you are cruising the archives and go back past a certain point (maybe early 2011), some of the pictures in the Judo Chops are missing due to a database shift/photo use policy. That might lessen your enjoyment some, but if you can get some joy from the links and text analysis, go for it.

Chael got TKOED in the 2nd round brother man.
But you are right he does not deserve a title shot at 205... not without putting some real wins together in the division.

My thoughts about this right now is that they are putting the Light Heavy Weight Division in stagnation for no reason. the 205lb champ is fighting two middleweights back to back?? why is this? At least Vitor was a former UFC champ and was on a winning streak. The fact that it was a short notice fight makes it semi justifiable.
Jones is not fighting till April regardless I guess but that is over 6 months away. There is no reason to have the champ fight another middleweight who has no recent fights at 205. We have plenty of challengers at 205.

So Jones will fight Chael in April, thats 6 months away, he will submit Chael in rounds 2-4. Then we have to wait another 3-6 months for Jones to fight again.

So we have to wait 9-12 months for a real Light Heavy Weight Title fight. It's crazy.

I miss old school bare-knuckle no weight-classes no time-limits MMA. Sure, tempo is lower and so on but it is what got me interested in the first place. And grappling gets more important (lower level of striking I know). Here's one:
