How are tournament BJJ matches scored? Obviously I assume a sub ends the match, but how does the scoring work if goes to points?
Straight from the ADCC rules:
Quote
Each position must be established for 3 seconds or more in order for points to be awarded.
Getting Mount position = 2 points
Back mount with hooks = 3 points
Passing the guard = 3 points
Knee on stomach = 2 points
Clean Sweep = 4 points
Sweep = 2 Points
Clean Take down (Ends passed the guard)= 4 points
Take down (Ends Guard or Half Guard)= 2 points
When changing multiple positions points will be awarded only for the position that has been established for 3 seconds or more.
Reversals are considered Sweeps as well.
Points only count in the last 5 minutes of the 10 minute fight - or the overtime periods. This is theoretically designed to allow people to go for subs and riskier moves before attempting to grind out a win. If the score's still tied after two overtimes, it becomes a referee decision - and that usually goes to the more aggressive/active fighter who spent more time in a dominant position.
A real points-based thrashing is only like 10-0 or 11-0 (like Galvao had this year against some European). Usually those who get in this tournament are at such a high level that they're rather even. Comparative advantages are slight, but they do matter.
Anyways, Braulio ended up winning the Absolute - as Xande Ribeiro tore a pectoral muscle while trying to scrape Braulio off of him in the finals. He's had a legendary year and even if he does nothing else in his career, he will be a god in the BJJ world.
Cobrinha ended up beating Rani Yahya, the 2007 divisional champ - and broke his arm accidentally. Guys and girls in this tournament haaaaaate tapping and they're usually good enough to get out of the subs or can tap before the breaking point is reached.
Chris Weidman, a purple belt (99% of ADCC competitors are the best of the black belts) did pretty well in this tournament. Granted, he was an Olympic hopeful wrestler, but he took one or two matches. I think he's transitioning into MMA as well. He'll be a good 185'er in a couple of years, I think.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.
