You're wrong, sadly. Bourne comes face to face with Carlos at least two times in the first book. And in the last encounter - in the end of the book - he also gets a good look at his face.

Clearly Bourne beats any Bond. And he could beat MacGyver with only a pen. He could probably beat Jack Bauer on one of his good days. Wolverine would be hard for him to beat though. An angry regenerative claw equipped mutant is not something you beat. No, you feed him muffins.

Bourne sees Carlos on at least two occasions in book 1 - once when he is going to meet Anjou and Carlos ambushes them, and at the end when he fights with Carlos in the abandoned Treadstone house. At the time of that fight he definitely thinks "I've seen you before in the course of this book".

So, saw ULTIMATUM this past weekend.
It was okay. Basically a retread of the second movie.

Was it just me, or did they utterly hint but not confirm that techie girl had a thing with Webb before he became Bourne?

The scene where he was covering the reporter was awesome. The rooftop running to save the girl thing, less so.

And the big finale... ooooo, he was BRAINWASHED... yeah, so, we got that in the first movie? Throwing in a random execution didn't really increase the impact.

But it was fun enough. I can't really complain beyond nitpicking.

I thought that meant that she just had a thing for him in the past, not necessarily that they were an item. And she would have known him from being his controller while he was still brainwashed Bourne, not a friend from his previous life as Webb. No?

they did imply that he and nicky had a thing, at least she did.

also they didnt say he was brainwashed, they showed that webb had chosen to become an assassin and gone to them. All they did was some reconditioning, bt he was already a killer to begin with.

did anyone notice the scene with landey in her office was the exact same scene from the end of two? where he tells her to get some rest as she is looking tired?? v. well done.

Just seen Bourne Ultimatum... as it has only just managed, Bourne-like, to wash up on our shores and stagger into the movie cinema.

Does anyone agree with the premise in SLATE magaszine (online www.slate.com) that it was an anti-american movie. I've been thinking and all I can come to is that at worst it is an anti-"no checks and balances" movie. The "baddies" are certainly not made out to be the standard US citizen or even crypto-citizen.

It did feel like the second; a question though:

Does anyone think the ending would have been stronger if they had left him in the water, unmoving? I thought it felt like they were trying to ard to set up a "happier" ending, when him falling into the water post the shot would have been a much more ambiguous ending; allowing the audience to decide if he lived or died.
Or maybe I just happen to like ambiguity like the Sopranos.
Definitely felt like David and Nikki had more of a thing than just being handler and handlee.
And the brainwashing flashbacks help to give a sense of who he is (ie a US SPECOPS guy) who chose to serve his country but didn't exepect to be made into an assassin for threats DOMESTIC and external.

It's not particularly anti-american. For every evil bad gov person, there's at least one equally nice, cuddly one.

As for the ending i see what you mean re ambiguity, but fundamentally, if they had doen what you suggest, it would have left the vast unwashed unsophisticated majority with only one conclusion as to how it ended.
