Just spilled the beans on the blog. . .
Subterranean Press will be publishing limited editions for both Gardens of the Moon and Deadhouse Gates! If the sales are good, they are planning to do the same with the rest of the series!
How cool is that!?!

Goddamit! I've already got three different editions of both of those, I don't need more!
However, if I can get a lettered edition, then I will, regardless of cost or geek factor.

Apparently the artist illustrating the books is supposed to be really, really good. It may be worth it just for that.
Plus the fact that Tor allow Sub Press to do this, and Sub Press wanting to do this, probably means that the sales figures of the series (always hard to come by) are continuing to increase at a most satisfactory rate!
But still, £70-odd quid per book...not cheap by any means.

Well, if SE himself selected the artist, he has to be good!

Well, we'll have to wait and see his attempts at Malazan art before saying things like that:p

This is the picture that made me buy the ASOIAF art book.
Komarck is a really great artist.
In case people were wondering, the numbered is going to be $125 and the lettered somewhere between $250 - $300 per book.
It's very tempting, especially after seeing SubPress' limited edition of The Lies of Locke Lamora. They put out a very nice product.

Oh, THAT artist! I love that pic of Jaime Lannister.
A big thumbs up for this guy. I think he is just about the best I have ever seen in this field. I might have to save up ...
So is this like an Alan Lee-LOTR book, with illustrations throught the novels, or just the covers?
Cheers,
La Sombra, oooooooh SHINY! *ferret shock*

Sorry, but what does Numbered and Lettered signify when it comes to these books?

O.K. I had a look on Pat's site and it says the following
So a lettered copy is basically just a really fancy version of the book, even rarer than a numbered one? Just hadn't heard of the term before?
Quote
If sales of those two books (500 numbered copies and 52 lettered copies) are up to expectation, look for us to sign on the rest of the series. Steve and we have chosen Michael Komarck to provide 8-10 full color illustrations for each volume, as well as a chapter head motif to be repeated. We’ll have more details soon, but at this point it looks as though the lettered editions will feature a dust jacket different from the numbered, be housed in a custom traycase, and also have an exclusive gatefold pull out illustration.

I think Scott Lynch said it best about his limited editions from SubPress:
Quote
I believe the run will be 500 Merely Rockin' Limited Edition hardcovers and 15 Ultra Fucking Rad Super Rockin' Edition versions. Obviously those aren't the 'official' descriptions, but what could be better than Ultra Fucking Rad? The answer is nothing. Nothing's better.
The numbered edition of Erikson's book will have all new artwork, better paper and binding and come in an edition of 500 signed copies (numbered 1 to 500). The lettered will have a new dustjacket, some different illustrations (probably) and come in a traycase (lettered A to Z, and AA to ZZ).
So basically you're paying more for the lettered because of the different art, the traycase, and the more limited run of the edition (52 copies as opposed to 500).

Lettered Editions are the Holy Grail of book collecting. Mostly they only go to publishers, editors, proof readers etc as thank yous.
