Someone gave me the first 2 books in terry goodkinds sword of truth series.. I'm looking to slot them in my reading schedule, but not sure what to expect. I'm wondering what author would probably best compare to him.. I'll post a few of authors I've read and any help would be appreciated.
Jordan, Feist, Erikson, Bakker, King, Swainston, Weis/Hickman, Cook, Martin, Tolkein, Silverberg

I'll be honest and say that I actually enjoyed the first three or so Goodkind books. Then they got way worse.
And now I await the mob to arrive.

paladin. Burn them. They don't compare to any authors. He's a self-righteous, egotistical, sadistic, and lunatic twat. He writing is utter shit.
(Rodeo, I liked the first book and Faith of the Fallen, you're not alone.

So.... he's like most authors?

Then tell me this.. is it as childish as Dragonlance? Easy not-so-original read like Feists work? Frustratingly repetative and slow like WoT? Longwinded and flowery as Tolkein or Gibson?

Sorry, to burn the SoT series is an insult to fire

Btw, there is a very noticeable connection to Jordan

Wizard's First Rule is not so bad - couple of good ideas, but ruined by ham-fisted writing. After that, the series rapidly degrades...
Still, it is worth reading - after SoT, you will appreciate how good Martin, Erikson, Mieville, etc. are

@paladin:
if you want more details, check out the Goodkind-thread here - or see the current TG-thread at westeros (I think they have 15-16 threads about Goodkind)

I particularly found the scene were this evil nun had sex with a demon with a barbed cock to be one of outmost quality.

You mean, the hero's Thing that rises in the presence of little girls? Gah.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

If it's any consolation, although Terry Goodkind did hold the record for the Biggest Advance ever paid for a fantasy series for four years ($700K), he was displaced in the record by a certain S. Erikson (?500K, about $800-850K in 1998 money, more like $900K now). However, since Goodkind's advance was for just three books and Erikson's was for ten, Goodkind still holds the Biggest Advance per Book for a fantasy series.
As for where Goodkind fits into the overall list of authors, it goes something like this:
Erikson/Martin/Bakker/Kay/Morgan/Vance/Tolkien
Lynch/Jones/PF Hamilton/Reynolds/Williams/Banks/Early Jordan
Later Jordan/Feist/Rowling
- (long gap)
Brooks/Eddings/Weis & Hickman
- (long gap)
- (long gap)
- (long gap)
- D. Brown
- (long gap)
- (long gap)
- (long gap) x 50,000
- Goodkind
- (very short gap)
- Newcombe/Hubbard

God your an arse.(Werthead that is)
Frustratingly repetative and slow like WoT-Yes
Well I don't agree with that description of WoT but if I did I'd say SoT does not fit that description imo.
Easy not-so-original read like Feists work-he stole his ideas from feist
Huh? Care to share? I never noticed any similarities to Feist.
I read and enjoyed up until the goat came into the story, book 7 or so.
