Excuse this if it has been covered previously.
I'm on my second run through Bonehunters, and I noticed certain similarities between the two of them. Both High Mages, both errrr...portly...and the mode of talking is very similar as well. Not to mention both coming from Darujhistan.
Just curious if anyone thought this?

Good idea, definately seems like there should be a connection of some kind...

If I remember correctly, Cutter's uncle was one of the seven immortals/mages to rule Darjuhistan. I walk further onto thin ice when I say Kruppe is one also, but Karpolan (a separate individual) is not and is only a weak High Mage working for the Trygalle Trade Guild.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Kruppe isn't on the council, and I would definately not call Karpolan weak...
Kruppe also seems to have a close connection with the Guild that supports this theory...

I don't recall any mention of Karpolan being from Darujhistan - the Trygalle originate in Elingarth, same as the Grey Swords, but operate in Darujhistan. May as well say that A'Kryonas (sp., don't have my books on me) was another of Kruppe's brothers, as he's a portly mage appearing on Genabackis.

Karpolan says himself that other Trygalle High Mages were his superior. And since those superior mages were dead (near the Deragoth statues), I deem him to be strong enough to be a High Mage, but not strong enough to play with the heavies like Tayschrenn.

Just because someone is fat and throws magic around people start to connect them with other characters. That's just wonderful, I guess, Baudin, Brukhalin and Trotts are also related to Kalam because they are described as huge and kill people.
There seems to be some connection between the magical arts and their weight. There's also been mentioned a few mages in the malaz army that were heavy, if not downright fat. Even under the long march on 7C one managed to stay fat. They are probably just able to draw vitality through their warren.
About the term weak high mages. A mage can be called weak in comparison to a high mage, but calling high mages weak that's weird. Their tittle implies they are masters of their art if not just their warren.
The Trygalle Mages are definently not weak. They are tearing holes through the warrens of powerful gods and ancient entities. Quick is always skulking around, sneaking in and out of the places. The Trygalle just ram through. I think the most impressive feat we've seen them accomplish was pulling a score or more wagons through the infected warrens, when other mages where dying when they just attempted to acces their warren. That was impressive... and then they went back.

And Kruppe's donkey bosses him around.
Shock! Donkey of Shadow running internal affairs in Darujhistan.

I guess it was the style of speaking that actually made it solidify in my head is all. It's very roundabout, like Kruppe. In Bonehunters Karpolan mentions Darujhistan as his home, where he like to return...so I think even though originating in Elingarth, perhaps the recruiting can happen from anywhere...or at least one would assume so.
