I'm currently reading Hellboy for the first time. On to volume 5 (library edition) which is absolutely fantastic.

I have an absolutely massive comic read pile which I'm going to try and get through a bit before I buy any more....

Ok before I buy many more...

Hellboy is great. If you haven't read BPRD, that is a must read too.

Agreed, HELLBOY and the BPRD are comics gold for so so many reasons... story, art, use of the medium, sheer guts to remove a main character and continue w the supporting cast and succeed brilliantly.

Been meaning to post this for a few days. I figured since I'm not on social media anymore, you folks are the only ones who might appreciate it. Anyway, earlier this week I watched the Thunderbolts* trailer, which looked great. Then the next morning when I woke up, the first thing that popped into my head once the proverbial fog had cleared was this terrible joke:

Q: Why are The Sentry's checks never any good?

Spoiler

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch

So you know how every once in awhile you'll see a work get a ton of praise but for some reason decide not to pick it up for years and then when you do you have to acknowledge everyone was totally right and feel like an idiot?

On a completely unrelated note, I started HELLBOY last night and suspect I'm going to be binging the full run.

As Abyss and I mention above, BPRD is a must read too.

It's on the buy list as are the two Hellboy Short Story TPBs.

I've gotten through Seed of Destruction, Wolves of Saint August (my favorite so far), The Chained Coffin, and the first issue of Wake the Devil.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the main arc, but are the short stories typically this strong?

Generally yes. Sometimes Mignola goes for a vignette or slice of life or comedy thing that shifts the tone completely, but otherwise his short story work is insanely effective.

I've still been chipping away at Hellboy and just finished THE THIRD WISH and THE ISLAND. I am just absolutely blown away by how good these are. Like, I always enjoyed the movies but the graphic novel is just on a whole other level. I'm really happy I sprung for the Omnibus Box Set. This absolutely deserves shelf space.

Agreed. HB and BPRD are top-shelf comics.

Humble Bundle has got a second phase TMNT bundle, with the rest of the IDW run plus the newer LAST RONIN LOST YEARS run, and the animated show adaptation, AND.... and this is the chef's kiss of the package... the Omnibus collections of the original started-it-all Eastman n Laird black n white series (all ebooks).

For $40ish you can get EVERYTHING, the original IDW vols 1-15 bundle and the new stuff. It's an insanely good deal if you're even a little into or interested in the characters. I bought the first bundle on a whim, this new set (you can buy just the new stuff, $18ish) was an instant purchase.

Am presently at vol 12 of the original IDW set... if i went back in time and told 20yo me that he/i will one day be deeply invested in Donatello's rivalry with his own robot clone, riveted by two pages of Michelangelo fighting Master Splinter over the fate of some ninja trainees, and sympathetic to usually hardcase Raphael, he/i would have smacked me stupid with a Singing Fish.

I've halted progress on Hellboy for now until I can get some advice. Is it better to power through Hellboy in full and then go back to BPRD after or to pause Hellboy after DARKNESS CALLS in order to get them to align for the finale?

Ah, allow me to introduce you to the Mignolaversity Reading Order. Up to date as of 2023, and is the way I read it all.

Oh wow. I'm going to have to pace myself so I don't kill my budget. There's a lot more here than I thought and I thought there was a lot already.

The good news is that I've already got the first two BPRD omnis, so I can hold jump over now and hope there's a holiday sale to pick up some more later in the month.

Just Finished the original IDW vols 1-15. which lined up w floppy #100 of the IDW run. Great finale, brought together EVERYTHING to that point, and it was a LOT. Heavier end than i was expecting for the general tone of the book but very much sticks the landing.

I was a bit hesitant to start the next run, w new (to me) writer Sophie Campbell replacing original co-creator Kevin Eastman on the writing as well as doing some of the art. Three vols in, yeah, she got this. The transition is seamless, and while some supporting cast are shuffled, none of it feels off, w the Turtles very much in character but a bit affected by events in Eastman's run, and characters who got a lot of focus in Eastman's run still present but sidelined for some new faces that bounce really well off the MCs (there are some who have very much a Next Generation vibe that is just ridiculous and perfect). Art team took a few issues to hit their stride but by the time Raphael is motorcycle racing, Leo is ninja running across rooftops, and Mikey is engaging in Jem and the Holograms cosplay, they got this just fine. The new setting, which i really can't explain w/out major spoilers, gives them so much good stuff to work with. Interestingly Don, who got a LOT of really fun on panel time in Eastman's run, is somewhat lower profile here so far, but there are hints he has a slow boil story that should hit nicely if it goes where i think (or wherever.... like i said, Campbell's clearly got this and knows what she's doing... ffs she made an utterly ridiculous death metal music Battle of the Bands work rivetting and not just because Rocksteady, Bebop and their pet anthropomorphic velociraptor drummer/weapons master Anchovy were the opposition).

All of which is to say, if you're a comics fan and even a little interested in TMNT for nostalgia or otherwise, the current Humble Bundle is an absolute steal and worth every penny.
