Just Finished STORMWATCH vols 1 and 2.
It was a fun nostalgia trip thru the 90s Image period, which wasn't bad, to a very low, almost painfully bad period of writing, til Warren Ellis takes over for the last ten issues of vol 1 and all of vol 2 and, naturally, nails it.
That said i still think it sucks that they wiped out most of the key characters offscreen in a (mostly by the numbers) WILDCATS/ALIENS crossover one shot. They deserved better, even if Ellis' shift to interest in 'his' character who would become THE AUTHORITY is fairly obvious.

Overall a fun marathon read tho.

In other news THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS: THE GOLDEN CHILD.... dear god. Such awesome, awesome art. Such awful, awful, writing. Please, for the love of gods, would someone please just give Frank Miller some crayons and some porn and lock him away somewhere where he can't do any more harm and artists like Rafael Grampa can work with something worth their talent?

Next up, RIVERS OF LONDON: ACTION AT A DISTANCE!

I can only comment on THE WICKED & THE DIVINE. It's....fine. It's not great and certainly not list-worthy...which gives me pause about this particular list...

But all the other stuff is largely not stuff I've read.

--------

sidebar: I recently sold my entire floppy collection (probably 250 comics ranging from the late 90's up to now) and got....$125 for it.

Comics are a SUNK cost. Don't let anyone convince you that they are worth much down the road. They are not. That was something they might have been for a few years in the 90's with silver age stuff....but anything published since the 80's is largely worthless.

Sigh. I'm salty.

So lately I've been picking up tpbs or omnibus editions of several Batman titles. This far I've gotten:

The Dark Knight Returns
Knightfall omnibuses 1-3
The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
Hush
Under the Red Hood
The Killing Joke

Year One, No Man's Land, and A Death in the Family are all on my buy list, but are there any other must-haves from those of you a bit better versed in DC? I'd love to pick up a strong Scarecrow story if anyone can suggest one.

I gave a massive collection away to a kids hospital. Was not worth the effort of trying to prep it for some form of sale.

Did pick out a few I knew to be rare, more for nostalgia than possible resale. Mostly late 80s xmen stuff... first Jim Lee issue, first appearance of Gambit, the second or third time Magneto died, etc.

I read the first volume of Die and thought it was just okay. I'll get back to it at some point, but I'm in no rush.

I'm also reading Immortal Hulk on MU, and while I like it, I'm not blown away by it as most are.

As for my holiday reads, I just finished Morrison's Animal Man and thought it was great. Especially the final volume, which made me want to reread vols 1 an 2. I'm also tearing through vol 4 of B.P.R.D.: Plague of Frogs - comics at its best! Incredible plot, fast moving, great characters and fantastic art.

Humble Bundle has another big Star Trek comics bundle. Most of the stuff from last year's bundle is there, plus some new stuff:
https://www.humblebu...-2020-idw-books

The $1 tier alone has 16 volumes of the JJverse comic, which is actually a ton of fun. (The "Star Trek (2011)" series continues in "Boldly Go".)
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

And Just Finished the last set including the final issue.

Wow.

WOW.

The art, as always, was stunning.

The characters all got satisfying conclusions.

And i have to give Hickman credit for managing to pull EVERYTHING together, in a combo of meeting expectations and subverting them.

This will stand as one of the bestest comics stories i have ever, ever read.

Spoiler

Really, just a stunning work i need to reread from the start before too long just to appreciate the whole thing.

Any comic/GN/sequential art fan who's not read this yet shouldn't hesitate to scoop up this whole series stat.

Joe Hill's LOCKE & KEY to crossover with SANDMAN: THE DREAMING in Oct.

This will either be brilliant or a horrid mistake.

The ending of Locke and Key is a mistake in and of itself, so there...

You're far from the only cold and dead inside and hates stories also puppies and freedom person to use the term loosely who thinks so and fair enough oooh look at me i'm edgy and hates things but as a complete story i think it's a pretty solid read.

I haven't been following the new Sandman Dreaming stuff at all but buzz seems positive and Gaiman was at least involved at the outset.

Fair bet i'll at least have a look, albeit maybe only once the story is complete GO BACK TA RUSSIA COMMUNIST .
