Marvel BOGO sale at Comixology, so I grabbed Waid & Sumnee's BLACK WIDOW trade, and then nabbed their new run on CAPTAIN AMERICA as well as my free one. Can't wait to bust into them. Love Waid's work!

Seems you like Ellis, so Planetary is a must.

Yep. Seconded. (Abyss would Third this BTW)...PLANETARY is 100% THE Ellis title to read over all others. To me it's his magnum opus.

I'd still stay Transmet is his magnum opus, mostly because Planetary was affected by the massive delays to the ending (you can tell it was meant to be a lot longer and a few plotlines are a bit rushed in the wrapup) but yes, nonetheless, Planetary is a must read.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Might just get the omnibus then - although I have looked at them and they seem quite big - does it make them a pain to read?

I read all the SANDMAN series as Absolute hardcover Omnibuses...they weren't the type of volume you could lay back and read. I mostly sat cross legged and had them open before me on the couch. They look great on the shelf tho!

Comics were my last dead tree holdout, but I’ve gone full digital. I find tpbs and hbs mostly sit and I don’t get around to them.
PLANETARY is brilliant, tho if you’re newish to comics you might want to wait a bit, because some of its brilliance lies in referencing or deconstructing well established comic tropes and story types.

That said, Ellis’ THE AUTHORITY is utterly worth your immediate attention.

I agree with JPK and Polish’s recos too.

What device do you read colour comics on?

I found the first volume of The Authority and picked it up, will read this weekend hopefully.

Ipad mini... Chunky, Kindle, Marvel Unlimited, Comixology, and Dark Horse apps.

I would say a bigger tablet would be better, but the mini's size suits my usual uses.

I have a Kindle Fire HD 8 with a 124GB SD card that I use exclusively for comics. I was holding out making the jump to digital until I could get a screen that was close to actual comic size. (I would love to upgrade to an HD 10 at some point.)

I sideload everything (not a fan of the way the Comixology app does scaling, plus I've got a crapload of comics from Humble Bundle) and I use Perfect Viewer and its PDF plugin to read everything. For Comixology books, I do the CBZ backup if it's offered, and if not there's a Chrome extension that will export from the Comixology reader into a CBZ.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

iPad 12.9 and 10.5. The 12.9 is incredible and makes you not want to read any other way. And my phone at work.

I have blasted through the first 3 volumes of injection - can't wait for the next issues to come out (although i don't think they even have a release date yet?!).

Also onto issue 12 of East of West which is very good.

Also bought:

1. Southern Bastards volumes 1 and 2
2. Paper girls volume 1
3. Black Science volume 1
4. Low volume 1
5. The Authority volumes 1 and 2
6. Deadly class volumes 1 and 2.

That's the drawback with Ellis. He's brilliant, but he regularly takes hiatus during ongoing series for various reasons. That said, I'm pretty sure his most recent hiatus (from Injection and Trees) was because of health issues so it's hard to really be upset.

As for myself, I've recently read the first onmibus for Batman: Knightfall (I adored the Scarecrow sidestory in there, and enjoyed the rest of it) and the whole run of the recent Carnage comic. Carnage drew heavily on Eldritch influences and was enjoyable if not great.

I treated myself to Dark Horse's ALIENS megabundle and am now working my way through. It's a LOT of fun, most of the stories are decent, some are great, most capture what worked in ALIEN and ALIENS and which every subsequent movie utterly failed to reproduce. The sheer alien-ness of the xenomorphs, the 'dirty' future setting, Weyland-Yutani fucking everyone over, it's all there most of the time. Some of the stories are weaker, but Colonial Marines acting tough and getting their asses kicked will always hold my eyetime.

At the same time also reading the original Marvel GODZILLA comic run. This is sheer silly retro-70s comic joy. Some of it is glorious... like SHIELD chasing Godzilla around with helicarriers and giant robot suits, or Hercules getting stepped on, some of it is pure cheese... there is simply no credible way to write cowboys on horses chasing Godzilla that doesn't come across as dumb... about 12 issues in its a lot of fun.

I was browsing a fantasy exhibit at the central library today and came across a comic version of Ben Aaronovichs Rivers of London/Peter Grant series.

Anyone read them? This was volume 3 so I take it that the comics must be at least mildly popular.

I read the vol 4 anthology, it was great, i will be getting the rest of them. I esp appreciate that they're original stories, not adaptations of the books.
