Started The Great Darkness Saga last night, good to hear you liked it.

...

Liking it a lot!
I have a huge nostalgic fondness for the original LoSH stories, and it's a treat that they included so many issues pre the actual Great Darkness story.

Just hitting the part where the Big Bad is becoming active.

I typically can't tolerate older comics except in short reading sessions due to the wordiness and cheesy dialog. So, I hesitated to start this. I almost bailed at the beginning, but I stuck with it after seeing your post and I am glad I did. This is so good! Turns out I don't mind wordiness, as this has a bit of that, it's the bad dialog that bothers me and this does not have that. Even the art, although a bit dated, is really good.

Am going to export this exchange to the comic thread.

Et voila...

It's funny... i almost never reread really old comics for the same reasons... cheesy dialogue, art aged badly, ridiculous thought bubbles... but LoSH was always a bit ahead of the curve in that respect and a little while ago i picked up a bunch of old Legion floppies for nothing at a UBS and found them surprisingly enjoyable. I'm seeing a lot of the same stuff now... yes, there is cheese, moreso knowing how the comic will evolve in the 90s, but little things like Element Lad giving Timber Wolf and Saturn Girl a hard time for whatever they are/n't doing, Invisible Kid 2.0 geeking out over Superboy, WIldfire just generally being as asshole.... it's really fun to read.

As for the art, some of the hair sure, but since this was always supposed to be a fairly idealised future, i don't mind it at all. Tho i kind of cringe at some of the female Legionnaires bikini costumes.

I heard Abnett's and Waid's runs are good and a few of the early Levitz arcs, such as the one we're reading now. Any recommendations for some of the earlier stuff? What to read and what to avoid.

Levitz' run up until about 1985 is pretty solid, altho arguably with GREAT DARKNESS SAGA you're already reading the best of it.

I think the Giffen/Birnbaum 'Five years later' run from 89-93ish is pretty awesome, but a lot of what makes it so good is familiarity with Levitz' run and the way back when original 'Superboy and the Legion' stories.
Also fun was the L.E.G.I.O.N. series around that time, for a lot of the same reasons.

When LoSh spun off 'Legionnaires' into its own series the story kind of meandered and i bailed. Then all three (LoSh, Legionnaires, LEGION) were cancelled.

I didn't read the '94 or 04 reboots, so can't comment but have heard good things about the 94 DnA run.

I have a funny history with the LoSH... when i was like 8 an older cousin gave me a stack of 'digests' that had all the original, unbelieveably cheesey Superboy and the Legion and LoSH stories.

I picked up the odd floppy or collected tpb over the years, never with any consistency. Pretty much missed the Great Darkness Saga

Picked up L.E.G.I.O.N. on a whim, saw the various connections to the old stories via the 5 Years Later LoSH title, picked that up, saw how both books were interweaving very very cleverly and was utterly drawn in up until the Legionnaires split because clones = too many characters = spin-off/money-grab = fuck you DC imma go read some x-men :D .

I never even heard of the LoSH until recently. Although I've never been into comics until the past 10 years or so, but it;s been mostly regular books until the past 2 years or so. There is a lot to sift through with LoSH, thanks for shortening my list.

If your library has Hoopla, they have a lot of Judge Dredd. I know you don't get Hoopla Abyss.

Oh man, I nabbed the entire Hickman FF arc on the Marvel sale...I got each TRADE for $2....two fucking dollars per 6 issues! This means that I got 4 trades for LESS than 10 dollars.

Sweet gods these end of year Comixology doorbuster sales are INSANE.

Last week I finally got to a pair of graphic novels I've been saving: The Amory Wars: Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV vol 1 by Claudio Sanchez and Low vol 1 by Rick Remender.

The Amory Wars is the third chapter of the story that goes along with Coheed and Cambria's albums that share the names. It's a fairly classic space opera with decent art. You're not really likely to find it special unless you're a fan of the music though.

Low is Remender's attempt to write an optimist heroine as a main character. I think he may have made her a bit too optimistic though, as she has some truly horrible shit happen to her and her family but it doesn't really seem like the circumstances she's finding herself in are getting through to her. Honestly, it almost reads as optimism as a mental/ social disorder. Story aside the art is entirely done in watercolours and you'll either love it (as I do) or hate it wholeheartedly. Small warning, the usual issue with Remender's work regarding female nudity and unreasonably skimpy clothing does show up here in force. The story and art did interest me enough that I plan to check out vol 2 despite its flaws.

Humble Bundle has the manga Attack on Titan vols 1-22 and extras for $18. Don't know much about the manga other than some very high ratings on Amazon, and I heard the anime was good. Seems like a great deal.

Low turns a very artistic story into a great one in Volume Two. I highly recommend it.

On a whim I picked up a comic called Limbo, by Dan Watters and Caspar Wijngaard. A techno-fantasy neo-noir type thing (pretty sure it's a standalone, even though there's a 1 on the spine of the trade) published through Image. Really excellent. Watters has real fun bending his reality around the noir detective tropes, and Wijngaard's art is fucking fantastic. I highly recommend it.
