Just finished Brubaker's Captain America run and thought it was very good. Great art that flowed nicely with the plot and dialogue making it feel a lot like a movie. I'm also going through Busiek's Avengers, which is only written 5 or so years prior to this and the difference in style is staggering, making it seem like it was written 20 years prior. Busiek's is much wordier, taking much longer to read. It's a bit tedious when they have to explain every thought and action.

Thanks, yes I already purchased a volume or two of Astro City and I've heard nothing but high praise. And I guess I came off too negative about his Avenger's run, as I do like it, just a bit dated for my tastes. I don't think it does any one thing particularly well, save George Perez's art, but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

And if you haven't already, once you get thru his run, read AVENGERS FOREVER and the JLA v AVENGERS series.
Busiek never quite matched these heights again in Marvel, they're pretty epic.

Been reading a lot lately - especially an almost all day marathon yesterday due to a lot of rain - figured I'd give an update.

Nextwave Agents of H.A.T.E. by Ellis. Short run, I thought it was pretty good.

Chew vol 5. I like this, but am sort of indifferent to it. It's not a chore to read, but it's not like I really look forward to reading it. The plot is all over the place, I wish it was more focused. Going to put it aside for a bit and come back to it.

Invincible vol 5 by Kirkman. It's good, but I'm putting this aside only because it's a long run and I want to cycle in some other stuff.

Black Science vol 1 by Remender. Very good, read it in one sitting.

Green Lantern by Johns. Been working my way through this for a while now and am up to Brightest Day. Up until this point I thought it was good, but I think it made a huge jump in quality with BD. I heard such great things about Blackest Night, but was a bit disappointed in it I had to check and make sure that Johns wrote BD.

I got the first trade of The Wild Storm. Warren Ellis, back in the 'verse.

Really really good. Not actually really a superhero comic at all, at least not yet, more of a sci-fi spy thing. In a lot of ways it takes what originally made the WS universe pretty unique, including his work on Stormwatch - basically a universe where the likes of the Suicide Squad and Thunderbolts would have been the main heroes, not fairly minor background teams - and then maxes it out, and fills it with some of Ellis' common obssessions.


The reimagining of the Engineer, and how she kickstarts the plot, is brilliant. Most of the others showing up in the first volume are guys I'm less invested in from the old versions- I know almost nothing about Deathblow and never cared much for Grifter- but Ellis has a handle on them.

The art is, at first glance, quite low-key for your average Ellis comic, but on second glance, completely suits the plot.


Looking forward to reading more. Though that's gonna be a while.

Picked up two more trades, first-in-series after Rebirth: Steve Orlando's Justice League of America and Snyder's All-Star Batman.


JLA is a bit messy, a bit scrappy, but a lot of fun nonetheless. I basically got it because Orlando's work on Midnighter impressed me enormously, and while he is obviously dealing with more editor-mandated things in this- given the theme of the comic, heroes being open with the public, Batman's inclusion makes no sense (so much so that it's called out repeatedly in the comic), and on the redemption side that is the other part of it, while Frost (formerly Killer Frost) makes sense from what they explain, Lobo... does not. Both guys, especially Batman, are clearly in it to sell the comic. But Orlando writes with enough attitude to make it all work.


Batman- the main proportion of the first trade, anyway- it tops off with a more forgettable new-Robin-training-story - is a superb Batman/Two-Face road trip piece. It takes a little from things that have obviously happened before, including the new Robin I didn't even realise existed, but stands very well alone as basically a story where Batman has to get Two-Face/Dent to a certain house, by road, 500 miles away, without being caught by the many many crims and bounty hunters on their tail. I haven't read much of Snyder's main Batman run, but this is a mostly clean start and it's great fun. Batman out of the city is a new look. Great art by John Romita jr as well - I've had mixed feelings on some of his work in the past- never bad but sometimes felt like his stylisation with big heavy linework in things like Spider-man was a bit distracting, but he's toned it down just a touch here and it's fantastic. Great colouring work helps too.

I have a huge nostalgic fondness for the original LoSH stories, and it's a treat that they included so many issues pre the actual Great Darkness story.

Just hitting the part where the Big Bad is becoming active.

I typically can't tolerate older comics except in short reading sessions due to the wordiness and cheesy dialog. So, I hesitated to start this. I almost bailed at the beginning, but I stuck with it after seeing your post and I am glad I did. This is so good! Turns out I don't mind wordiness, as this has a bit of that, it's the bad dialog that bothers me and this does not have that. Even the art, although a bit dated, is really good.

Am going to export this exchange to the comic thread.

It's funny... i almost never reread really old comics for the same reasons... cheesy dialogue, art aged badly, ridiculous thought bubbles... but LoSH was always a bit ahead of the curve in that respect and a little while ago i picked up a bunch of old Legion floppies for nothing at a UBS and found them surprisingly enjoyable. I'm seeing a lot of the same stuff now... yes, there is cheese, moreso knowing how the comic will evolve in the 90s, but little things like Element Lad giving Timber Wolf and Saturn Girl a hard time for whatever they are/n't doing, Invisible Kid 2.0 geeking out over Superboy, WIldfire just generally being as asshole.... it's really fun to read.

As for the art, some of the hair sure, but since this was always supposed to be a fairly idealised future, i don't mind it at all. Tho i kind of cringe at some of the female Legionnaires bikini costumes.
