Hey Amph, I'm working my way through the "All New X-Men" run you mentioned. It's actually part of the reason I got the sub in the first place. I absolutely love how they're handling
Spoiler

I really like how they just embrace the "logically, this makes no sense, but let's really give each of these characters a strong identity and we'll get somewhere cool" line of thinking. It works and it made the X Men have real conflicts about what they're doing and being.

Check out the Winter Soldier series by Kos and Rudy (with some guest artists). Some of the best, most experimental art and space-exoanding writing in any series going. Great stuff and limited in scope/cast/back history, so it's easy to pick up as a small series.

Soooooooo, it sounds like Jonathan Hickman might be aboard DC Comics now for Rebirth.

If this actually happens (he tweeted something that alludes to it), then I think that Rebirth might have a shot at being interesting. Hickman doesn't usually deliver anything but good fiction. Only time will tell.

Speaking of Hickman, my buddy lent me a trade of his 4-issue original mini-series PAX ROMANA and it's just as good as you'd expect it to be. In a nutshell: mid-21st century scientists discover time travel and the then-pope sends a team back to ancient Rome to right some wrongs, and set the world on a slightly altered path.

Oh, and I broke down and bought the hardcover SECRET WARS collected...it's GORGEOUS.

Get the Elektra book by Del Mundo and Blackman. It's the highest level of art I've ever seen in comics. The layouts and lettering are worthy of college courses.

Wait, Del Mundo did a whole book and not just the cover?

Don't think I've ever seen that. :nuke:

Pssst. You would not have to get this excited if you read the floppies (or in my case, the digital floppies for which I don't even have to get out of bed to go get).

;)

Also, finished SECRET WARS. Great stuff from Hickman yet again.

Floppies... meh.

I want 132 pages of this madness at once, not a paltry 22 at a time for months on end.

I'll give you that EoW DEFINITELY reads easier as a collection. You lose some of the complexities if you have to wait month to month.

The floppy format just annoys me because the slower/weaker/setup issues are, perhaps unfairly, frustrating. I don't care how brilliant a conversation it is, 22 pages of little square boxes of talking heads folowed by a month of waiting for someone to get punched in the neck doesn't work. I utterly prefer reading my sequential art/graphic storytelling in big eventful chunks.

Yeah, this last arc has been particularly stellar for sure.

Wow... This was ... less... than I was expecting.
New art was just ok, story lacked the epic gleeful fantasy madness of the last two collections. Characters almost seemed like a different writer had taken over.
Someone tell me they read this and I'm full of crap, please?

I'm learning that the artists have a very large effect on the final product in terms of being a sounding board and framing the script in the best way. I don't read Rat Queens, but I note the artist changed twice. Once because the first artist was a domestic abuser and arrested for it, and once because the second artist has health problems.

The third volume had Fuller coming on full time. Maybe the artist's relationship with the writer isn't jelled together fully or the wheelhouses of the two don't overlap.

Stelfreeze certainly elevated TNC's script for Black Panther to a much higher degree and made the first issue a truly great one.

Fowler's art is so-so at best, and she has a history of shennanigans of not being able to work well with other creators that make books with her. There's a long internet fiasco where she basically burned a bridge with a writer in a blaze of idiocy (I think he was writing a war graphic novel), which she started, never finished, didn't deliver the pages, tried to change what was agreed upon (the guy had emails to the contrary), and all manner of assholery...ending in not giving back the advance of cash he paid her for work he never got. I won't read books she draws, nor will I ever intentionally give her money. She's the reason I gave up on Rat Queens.

Abyss, as to the content, I've heard this from others concerning the most recent volume. Maybe Weibe is tapped out on the story right now? He's a solid creator, so hopefully he can get back to square.

I'm going to be reading EARTH ONE: WONDER WOMAN by Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette. I hear nothing but good things, and the whole trade is only $15 digital.

I went through some of her works to check out her style. I don't like her chunky art choices, general character design, or angles used for scenes. They do not seem on par with other comparable professional artists to me. It's not work that elevates scripts (to me).

Yeesh. Sorry about the dropoff in what you saw as a great running series.
