I, on the other hand, really like the Wicked+the Divine. I really enjoy the idea of the intersecting ideas of worship/godhood/celebrity, all in all I find it a pretty good examination so far off our collective obsession with popular cultural and figures within it along with the pageantry that surrounds such things and people. Issue 3 in particular I think examines the ridiculousness of the imagery that surrounds some of our celebrities. So, in good-hearted disagreement, I think the book (like past works by the creative team) focuses on a pretty interesting and important themes.

Also I dropped the Punisher because of it's borderline ignorant/racist handling of prisons, those people who go to prisons, and the very untimely sympathetic view of police officer shooting an unarmed person of colour. Really no room for a completely shallow book (which I guess I should have predicted it as the Punisher isn't known of his subtlety).

Today's a solid release Wednesday.

EAST OF WEST #15 is out.

So is DOCTOR WHO: ELEVENTH DOCTOR #2

and BATGIRL: FUTURE'S END #1 (which features the return of both Cassandra Cain's Batgirl, as well as (my fave) Stephanie Brown's Batgirl, and a new Batgirl called Tiffany. Written by Gail Simone, can't wait to read it!

I'm going to post that again.

Steph Brown is back as BATGIRL (in a future continuity)

Steve Grant's TWO GUNS collected ed. Meh. Not as clever as it wants to be. Not actiony enough. Glad i bought it used.

Max Brooks' EXTINCTION PARADE, collected ed vol 1. Stereotypical 'hot chick' vampires realize the ongoing zombipocalypse is going to a be a problem to their food supply. Not as clever as WWZ, but the art is wonderfully detailed and kinetic, benefits nicely from being set in Southeast Asia.

I likely will...but I'm just sayin'

This is something that Morrison's been wanting to get out there for like 5 years now.

Yeah but as with most things Morrison, it's safer to wait til he's done. That way either it's brilliant and you get to enjoy the complete work, or it's not and you haven't spent months and months building expectations that will be crushed when Superman sings Darkseid to death.

It was Morrison's run on ADVENTURE COMICS that did me in by reading it issue by issue...as every single one confused me freshly. Most of his work is just easier to consume as a graphic novel.

Free comics from comixology until midnight EST
It's basically $50.00 of digital form comics, which is kind of cool :)

Boo I missed it! I should have read my Comixology emails!

I recently picked up Preacher.. . I know I am very late to the game. I am loving it, it so horrifyingly delightful. I also picked Dead Letters and I really like it.

Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four/FF run....Holy. Galactifuck.
Seriously, this alone justifies a subscription to the Marvel Meth.... I haven't been so utterly blown away by a run since Joss Whedon on Astonishing Xmen... And this was better.

One series has a huge change and one is brand new and BOTH are worth reading this week.

THOR this week sees male Thor on the moon (post-previous arc) where the hammer cannot be lifted by ANYONE, not just Thor but the rest of the Asgardians, including Odin himself who bespelled the hammer to begin with. Female Thor is not introduced till the end of the issue, but it's a lovely reveal and now I THINK I get where they are going with this...and I liked it a lot.

But what I was most looking forward to this week was the debut of DC's GOTHAM ACADEMY by Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher, and art by Karl Kerschl, in which we see the students at a super posh Gotham prep school dealing with their spooky campus, with it's inhabitants (both weird and some cruel) and with the larger world of Gotham City happening outside it. It is an absolutely STUNNING debut. This is literally slice of life comics at their finest. Loved every page. Can't wait to see where it goes.

This week's other reads: RAT QUEENS #8 (a bit of a filler issue really, it's a background on Violet but it's nothing special), and DOCTOR WHO: THE ELEVENTH DOCTOR #3 (really solid. I love how Rob Williams seems to be able to capture not only Matt Smith's vocal styles, but he's also brilliant at crafting standalone Doctor Who stories, with nods to overall arcs)

Next week: Cameron Stewart & Brenden Fletcher, art by Babs Tarr BATGIRL relaunch happens. Really looking fwd to that as well.

Guh.

BATGIRL #35 with new creative team of Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher, and Babs Tarr is AWFUL.

it's what a douchy hipster would come up with writing Batgirl. I'm not kidding. The art is great, but the writing is typical Cameron Stewart...lame social-media infused dialogue, talking about coffee, music, tattoos, and other assorted bollocks crapola. The action doesn't even really start in this issue. Babs traps a villain by replying to him on Tinder (or a facsimile thereof) where he serendipitously found her attractive so he messaged her, and she agees to meet him, but does so as Batgirl....dunh dunh dunh! Surprise villain jerk!

Ugh.

What a horrible, pretentious mess.

Sad, cause I was looking fwd to it.

Yknow, i read the preview pages at CBR and somehow i just KNEW that's where it was going.

Sad because i've entered an Avengers phase on the Marvel Meth and the writers, Hickman and Remender in particular, just generally write female characters really really well... Ms Marvel is exactly the confident powerhouse she should be, Rogue taking no shit from anyone, Black Widow borderline sociopath, Wasp can be sexually aggressive but has Cap America's respect because she's one of the most experienced heroes around and shows it... and DC does Tinder as a plot point.
