She is pretty cool. She gave me my first X Men comic and my first Xanth novel when I was just a wee lass. Sealing my love of fantasy and comic books for life. we usually go to the comic.book store together with my daughter (who is 11). Three generations of comic book nerd gals.

Finished Against All Things Ending by Steven R. Donaldson. I really liked the first chronicles, but the second and the first two books of the third have been so-so. I have been putting off reading the last two books, but to my surprise I really liked this book. I think it's right up there with TPTP as being my favorite in the series. Everything is coming together, and it even has sort of a Malazan vibe to it. I'm already a third of the way into The Last Dark and am enjoying it so far.

My comics backlog keeps growing... picked up something called THE GRIFF on a whim... looks like a post-dragon-apocalypse-brave-survivors-rally kind of thing. Nice art, snappy dialogue, will get to it soon.

Finished the BPRD Frog War storyline. One monster HELLBOY collection still to go. This stuff has gotten progressively better and better but can't quite shake the pattern of having some deus ex mysterioso bail out the main characters every time things truly go to crap. The art is brilliant, the general storylines great, the characters totally involving... but i really dislike how every time we hit a 'how the fuck will they survive THIS?' moment, some supposedly dead or never seen before mystic thingymabob shows up and saves the day out of nowhere. It's like Mignola and his co-creators just can't let the characters win on their own most of the time. HELLBOY got better with this but BPRD, even at the absolute climax of the Frog War still pulled a 'suddenly out of nowhere!' and that really bugged me. Not that any of this will stop me from moving on to Hell On Earth.

On the Marvel Meth, read most of the assorted X-men and Avengers stuff for about three years leading up to the 2011 FEAR ITSELF crossover. Just sort of flipping thru FEAR now... it suffers all the usual marvel mega crossover madness problems but i'd like to read the significant bits before moving along.

I see that over on THRILLBENT Waid and Kitson are rolling along with EMPIRE vol 2. I was going to wait until they got further along and then subscribe long enough to binge read, but that Vol 1 pdf is REALLY tempting. If ARCANUM hadn't so totally fallen by the wayside i probably would have locked this in a while ago.

Either way. The new outfit is nice, bright and MOSTLY practical. The snaps for the cape are especially great, and the yellow Doc Martens are the BOMB.

Problems: The cowl isn't attached. It's going to fly off the minute she gets hit. It's basically a black tiara. Leather jacket...love that she wears a jacket...HATE that it's Leather. No one is choosing leather when picking out superhero outfit.

Creative team: Hate Cameron Stewart's attitude (but I can't complain about his writing) and his art is cool. Plus Babs art is great. Apparently they are going for a lighter tone than of recent...and I can't argue with that. I've always liked my Batgirl to be lighter toned with more jokes.

I'll be picking up the title to see how it goes over...

He is probably my favourite writer, favourite title being The Authority.

I liked, didn't love, TOKYO STORM. Yes, it's different and fun but i thought the twist wasn't original or clever enough for an Ellis story. The man who wrote PLANETARY could have done something more interesting with big ass robot suits and monsters, i thought.

CRECY's a neat work. Haven't read SUPERGOD yet.
Liked the RED gn, didn't think much of the movies.
Psyched for TREES but will wait for the trade.

Ellis is brilliant. The ONLY problem seems to be where publishers or imprints allow him to start telling a story, only to see it either get cancelled mid-story, or it just kind of disappears off the radar. I mean the guy has a WHOLE section of his FAQ dedicated to the question: What happened to *insert comic title here*? (Note: That's not on him....it's on those who commission his work and then stifle it midway through)

Though stuff like JUPITER'S LEGACY is giving it a run for its money, IMNSHO nothing will EVER touch PLANETARY for the sheer science-y, history, action-y, mad-scientists and robots and aliens and WWI supermen and crazy batshit cities of gold and other dimension-ness of that title. It's flat out brilliant from beginning to end. No stumbles whatsoever.


And I'll chime in on his novels too...I have and have read both. They are like...Haruki Murakami novels if he had dipped his pen into LSD and American porno before scribbling down stories while drunk on scotch.

Also, the man himself is about as super nice a comic creator as I've ever met.

I am current reading a shit load of titles, I prefer digitally but since I got fired this week yesterday probably going to be last week buying comics for a while (unless I find a job super quick) which is sad but some pretty great titles came out this week from Vertigo (American Vampire, which if you aren't reading it you should, Snyder is a much better writer on his creator-owned stuff), Image (Shutter, fun and madcap with a more serious story underneath--definitely recommend, Red City, a fun neonoir tale set in Mars, not much meat though so I'll probably drop it, Rise of the Magi, again fun but not much meat though the ending of this issue might change that, Death Vigil, a great start and the art is awesome, will probably return one day, and finally Spread, which is horror comic and it's high on body-horror in this issue, and near the end hints at something else, it's very good), and Marvel (I've enjoyed the Marvel universe since I was child, and I doubt I'll stop anytime soon.)

Ellis' novels? Did not know about them. Added to TBR list aaaaand my TBR list is reaching a worryingly giant size again... anyday now its going to start roaring, kidnapping blondes and climbing the Empire State Building to swipe at planes

So two big things happened in Marvel comics this week.

1. Thor will now be a woman. My feelings on this are mixed. A female replacement god in the Thor role from Asgard is fine. No problems. My issue stems from the fact that the real Thor is still around and just isn't currently worthy of the hammer. So the female Thor is a place holder. I'd have been much more impressed had they gone the route they did with Captain Marvel, where the male version is gone, and Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers stepped up into the role fully. That was cool, and continues to be AWESOME (seriously, you should be reading Kelly Sue Deconnick's run on the title). So while I can see the good intentions here, without Thor being totally out of the picture, it makes little sense to replace him (please note that none of this has to do with gender for me...I'd be just as mixed feelings about it if it were another guy filling the role).

2. Sam Wilson (Falcon) will be the new Captain America. This is less surprising news, as just about everyone saw it coming. Steve Rodgers time is coming to an end, and who better to fill the Cap shoes than a character who has been entrenched in the Cap books (and movies) for years now. Great choice!

While I buy it getting reverted in a year with Thor...the Sam Wilson Cap I feel will stick...especially because Chris Evans is only contracted for Cap 3 and AVENGERS 2....so it's ENTIRELY possible that for AVENGERS 3, it will be Sam Wilson as Cap.
