All of you who consume comics...OWE it to yourselves to read Brian K. Vaughn's SAGA...
READ. THIS. BOOK.

WAITING. FOR. MORE. TRADES.

- Abyss, anti-floppiist.

Probably smart...as this series is flat-out ADDICTIVE with a capital A. So you'd be floppy-collecting for however long Vaughn plans to run it...didn't Y THE LAST MAN run into the 100's of issues?

Either way, I'm stuck into it now and wouldn't stop for the world.

Ok QT... based entirely on your upthread recos i picked up SAGA trades 1 and 2 when i spotted them on sale recently, and started them last night.
And now i only have about ten pages left in 2 and I'M SERIOUSLY PISSED BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME.

Haven't gotten such a 'sense of wonder' from comics in ages. Vaughn does everything right, from the characters to the pacing to the sheer alien awesomeness of the settings. And the art is glorious... the Rocketship Forest may be my favorite two-page-panel of the year.

The characters are engaging, fun, manage to occasionally surprise ... i really like the underlying narrative, and the overall sense of 'fun', that Vaughn and Staples create just kept me turning pages.

Anyhow tnx for the reco, the books totally lived up to it. And now i have to wait for more trades, you prick.

Sorry.

But not sorry.

Now I've gotten you back for Dresden all those years ago! LOL

Yeah, the only thing out right now that can even get close to touching SAGA for sheer uniqueness...is Hickman's EAST OF WEST. But yeah, don't pick that up as we are only at Issue 6...

Happy you liked SAGA though. And how about the One-Eyed Author character....totally based on Warren Ellis apparently.

This is a short comic, and free...but really quite poignant as a POV from a Superhero who lived long enough to see some things differently

worth a look.

I am perilously close to subscribing to Marvel Unlimited.
On the one hand, thousands of comics, classic and new e-accessible for one low yearly fee. Otoh, good bye free time, goodbye.

Yeah I nearly pulled that trigger too.

Read the first vol. of Dark Horse's new STAR WARS series (IN THE SHADOW OF YAVIN). Pretty good, reminiscent of the old Marvel Comics STAR WARS, but better.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Just read Transformers: More Then Meets the Eye volumes 4 and 5 last night. Man, you guys. THIS COMIC.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

My best friend reads about 75% of his titles on his ipad, and he loves it. The dynamic reading feature really makes the comics suspenseful.

I just acquired a mini and have started reading comics on it and i have to say i really enjoy it. I know some people feel you can only really enjoy a comic on a 10" tab, but i think that the mini's 7.9" is all good and didn't have a problem with the Nexus and Playbook's 7" screens either.

That said, I haven't stopped reading GNs... unlike books, where i'm like 85% converted to ebooks now, i still enjoy the physical experience of reading a paper comic.

I was just wondering this myself, as I am about to acquire a kindle fire, and I notice Amazon has a nice rotation of $2.99 GN e-books... Your answers are encouraging.

I have a Nexus 10 with Comic Rack and it's perfect for comics.
About the same size as a comic page.

Just started using Comixology on the kindle fire and it's pretty great. Tons of free comics. Good stuff too, like Batman Black & White, retro FF4 stuff, etc. You can view them in panel mode so it automatically zooms in to each panel in the correct order as you tap the screen. I acutally prefer this to paper GNs now. Makes the stories seem longer too, since it allows you to slow down and enjoy each and every panel, instead of scanning the whole page quickly, as I tend to be in the bad habit of doing... Only problem is I wish you could archive them on your cloud instead of having to choose between deleting them or having them take up permanent space on your device. Amazon also has some cheap GNs - such as a rotating selection of $3.99 Hellboy/B.P.R.D. TPBs. I picked up X:Men: Days of Future Past for < $4.

Are any of you reading the New Avengers series with the Illuminati and the Incursion story line?

If not, you should! It's a rather dark story that actually gives me the chills when reading it. The very best of men pushed to the very edge in order to do what is, apparently, absolutely neccessary.

Spoiler

Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Have recently been reading two similar manga's (which to my knowledge have not be officially translated, if they have I will find and buy them) about young men trying to fix their past.

The first one is called 'Again!!' by Kubo Mitsurou. I'd almost call it a SF as it involves a form of time travel, but it's much more interested in the characters. I've read other mangas by Kubo and I've come to like her stuff a lot. She's not afraid to touch upon heavier issues while still keeping a sense of humour and optimism about it. I'd whole heartily recommend it but it's a pretty niche product feature weird time traveling/freaky-friday-with-your-past-self, Oendan, and some interesting character interaction.

The second one is called 'Koe no Katachi' by Ooima Yoshitoki. This one is straight up slice-of-life manga. It's both heart-warming\heart-breaking at the same time. It focuses on an older highschool teenagers, the male lead attempting to atone for his past bullying of the deaf girl who is the female lead (they both seem to like each other). It deals with problems young people have, like bullying, suicide, disabilities, friendship, and ultimately, I think, redemption (which you might not think is a teenage issue but the male lead will make you think otherwise!). The cast is likeable, or if not that understandable in their actions. There's only 25 issues at the moment but I've really enjoyed what I've read so far.

(as an aside, two of the best pieces of literature I've read the not only features but occasionally focuses on disabilities are mangas, which means either Japan is super sensitive to these issues or, more likely, need to broaden my horizons)

Remender's X-FORCE run: brilliant. possibly the best Deadpool ever written. The Dark Angel Saga was pure x-candy.

UNCANNY X-MEN from Messiah Complex thru Utopia. Fun to get caught up on all that and be able to easily skim/skip the filler issues and boring side stories.

Carey's X-MEN LEGACY - not bad. varies between solid storytelling and just clearing up old crap for the sake of saying they cleared up old crap, but points for trying. When done properly, Professor X makes a great badass.

Now getting into Peter David's second X-FACTOR run (post Decimation, Jamie Madrox in charge). I'm glad i didn't read these as monthly floppies because relatively little happens each issue, but as an overall storyline heading somewhere interesting, David is a master and i'm liking where he's going.

HELLBOY - thru Wake the Devil. Glorious Mignola art but his storytelling hasn't quite come together yet.

Peter David's run on X-Factor is one of the best runs on mainstream superhero comics in the last 2 decades I'd think. But you're right it would have been a slow read if you went issue to issue. Currently he has a sort-of-continuation of his run is 'All-New X-Factor'.

I loves me some Peter David. Best Star Trek author (Imzadi), and I've recently enjoyed his old Hulk stuff as well. Hoping for some cheap omnibus versions of more of his stuff...and/or cheap digital volumes...

His original X-Factor run and his Hulk run are legendary.
He's slowed down his pace with this X-Factor run, but his storytelling has improved if anything. I admit that on a certain level the pacing bugs me because an entire 22 page floppy without a single punch thrown or splosion better be jawdropping and often it isn't, but the slow and methodical way he's building the story, read back to back as opposed to monthly, really does work nicely.
