Hey, I'm just (like I said) giving Johns the benefit of the doubt. The guy is a solid creator, and a good writer.

Here's the video announcement.

From that I draw that things are largely staying the same (Example: Batman is still as old as he is (AKA youngish), and events are following normally), but modifications are coming to the Nu52 to bring in missing aspects. So I'd be willing to go as far as "soft" reboot, nothing further. It's certainly not a panic switch hard reboot.

Exactly. Neither Flash: Rebirth nor Green Lantern: Rebirth were reboots, so I'm assuming they're naming this whole thing the same for a reason and this won't be a proper one either. Especially since Johns wrote both of those.

And what key event happened in both of those earlier Rebirths....?
Anyone... Anyone...? Something to do with an old thing... Anyone? Old thing... Comes back... And does what?Anyone... Anyone...? Old thing comes back and replaces new thing that did what...?Anyone...? ....replaces new thing that previously replaced it. Yessssssss......

Indeed.

But it did those things without going "BEEEEEEEP! WE'RE IN A NEW CONTINUITY NOW THANKS FOR PLAYING!" and in Green Lantern's case at least (I haven't read the Flash one) in fact managed to take some of the very stupid things that had happened since the glory days of Hal and tie them in with the old ideas (some of which were also silly) to take the whole Green Lantern mythos to a new level without deleting any of it.

It remains to be seen if this Rebirth can have the same level of success, because it's going to be much harder to do on a company-wide scale and I'm not sure GJ loves the rest of the DCU as much as he clearly does GL, but I wouldn't go writing it off just yet.

I also would like to know why WB didn't hand the creative keys to the cinematic kingdom to Johns - he's not the best writer though he's really good no doubt but he's a star at exactly the sort of creative control it would have needed. But that's another subject.

Hey, if Johns can pull this off without making it seem like a contrivance and yet another reboot, all power to him.But if his Big Idea is that the multiverse was always there and we're just going to handwave all things Nu52 and go back to the glory days, I call Reboot. Maybe pReboot, but there is a boot in there somewhere dammit.

Hickman and Dragotta's EAST OF WEST is now up to issue #24 and I'm ready to not only call this one of my most-looked-forward-to-reads each month, but the story in these pages is pretty much at an EVANGELION-level excellence and mind-fuckery.

I'll wager that when is all said and done, this comic series will be lauded by most. It's easily at SAGA's level...but doesn't get nearly as much play in the mainstream media.

For those of you who love comics...you SHOULD be reading EoW.

I am reading EAST OF WEST.

Actually i am currently REreading EoW in anticipation of the next tpd that streets in April i think.

It is as good as QT says it is. Also, better.

I would actually say it is more intelligent than SAGA (tho not as emotionally wrenching), more outrageous than RAT QUEENS (tho not as funny), and at times edging on SANDMAN levels of dialogue and depth of story.

Could not be more worth your money and eyetime if it were free.

Uber.

In the last days of WW2 the Nazis bring out the wunderwaffen superhumans, thus starting a different sort of arms race.

It's pretty cool.

For those whose interest was peaked by me mention of how good DESCENDER by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen is...(and it fucking is. It's incredible. I'm up to issue #10 now and it's already a fave).

Like any good pusher of comics, the whole first issue is available to read free over at BoingBoing. Go read it now!

I finally bit the bullet and got a year of Marvel Unlimited. I'm starting it off with the 2008 run of X-force. I suspect a lot of other reading is going to fall to the side for awhile.

Do yourself a favour and read EVERYTHING Jonathan Hickman has written that is on there. His FF run is especially incredible,

On it. Haven't read any FF yet, so I'll start there.

You may like the following, which I came across in my six months of MU:

Elektra by Haden Blackman and Mike del Mundo. The finest short arc I have ever seen in comics. The art is generation defining. The writing is eerie, brutally cold, and empathetic with a character who is brilliantly realized.

Willow Wilson's Ms Marvel is a delight and a breath of fresh air. Must read.

Hickman's anything as others have said. Explorative, inspiring, deeply meaningful.

Mark Waid's anything. He is so good at handling Daredevil and other B list heroes.

Gail Simone and Fabian Nicieza on Deadpool/Agent X. They are masters of balancing juvenile humor with real stakes and fun characters. Gail Simone is a fount of joy, wit, and connections. All of her works are great.

Rick Remender's anything, especially his X Force run. Smart, well written, and gritty takes on characters.

The Uncanny X Men run where the writers set off gleefully all the time paradoxes by the original team to the present day.

Guardians of Galaxy reboot and related works. Fun, universe expanding works. Read the Agent Venom stuff and the Rocket Racoon series and Groot solo series.

Dan Abnett's anything. He makes terrific villains and pushes the heroes hard to get to the final stages.

Black Panther is interesting, because there is so much terrible, yet fascinating stuff. A sorely mishandled character over the years. Hickman's version is the one I like best.

The Wolverines is also a good series. Having all of the crappy copies of Wolverine be upgraded with better writing and a forced co-op with Mystique works way, way better than I thought.

Richard Morgan's Black Widow short run is brilliant. It's the best Romanova stories that have been done. The Edmondson/Noto series still ongoing today is very good, although not quite Morgan level.

The Spiderman arc dealing with Otto Octavius mentally battling Peter is a great series. Very well done and made me care about all of the characters, old and new.

Matt Fraction's anything. His Hawkeye is glorious. Some of the best work in minimalist dialogue, yet visually expressive comics. The Iron Fist work is also very good. The Brubaker solo stuff I didn't like as much on Captain America etc, but it is the basis for the movies.

Ann Nocenti is a little hit and miss, but her stuff is very good when on.

There's a ton of comics and frankly, most of them are not good. But the great ones make this worthwhile.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Jonathan Hickman fans...SECRET WARS (all 9 issues) is out today in Hardcover.

It's $50 in Canada, so I'm unsure if I'll spend that much...but to have a Hickman event book in hardcover is a strong draw.

Alternately most of it , spin offs, crossovers and one shots included, is already on the Unlimited app and the rest should be there in three months or so. A year runs $70.

So I should get back on the MU app is what you are saying?

I think I was more jazzed to own a hardback Hickman...but in the end that's just Physical-book me arguing with Digital-book me.

Yeah, I grasp the conflict. And if it were signed I'd be all over that, but as it stands, it's not even the whole story.

Hey Amph, I'm working my way through the "All New X-Men" run you mentioned. It's actually part of the reason I got the sub in the first place. I absolutely love how they're handling
