Tom Morello posted this to his twitter. Not the greatest sound quality, but you can hear Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing cut through.

I watched a two-part documentary about the early days of the Sunset Strip scene. One of the take-aways is Eddie Van Halen's virtuosity and technique basically influenced all the lead guitarists that came after. To a point that they would straight up try to mimic his playing. I believe there was a legend that it pissed him off so much that he eventually would try to shield/hide his technique when playing live.

Just saw that Eddie had passed away. One of greatest guitar players ever, and definitely a big reason I started playing. I've had enough with 2020 already.

Hmm ... gave that a listen. Not really my bag in chill/ambient stuff but not terribad either.

I'm more into the compilations like Space Trip (youtube), Shingo Nakamura, Ministry of Sound chillout through to Amethystium and so on. A bit more melodic. From what I recall it grew out of listening to Enigma, Chicane, Delerium etc back in the 90s then the classic Cafe del Mar yearly compilations - the Jose Padilla stuff was the best but the later Bruno stuff isn't bad, lots of chillwave et al on those.

Great stuff for when you're just sitting reading. I have to be careful if I play it in the car because it can relax me a bit too much ...

Heck, I even sometimes put on good old Blue/Brown (heh) noise to really zone out.

Takes me back. :)

EDIT: just had ads popup on youtube ... it's 20 years since Linkin Park released Hybrid Theory (their original name). Gah, I'm old. :(

In case you missed Run the Jewels on AS performing their new album, here it is. It's understated and reserved of me to say this kicks ass, but words can't do it justice, so you just need to watch and listen. Enjoy.

I've been spending my day off listening to the new Springteen album - Letter to You.

I wonder who the "criminal clown who's stolen the throne" in The House of a Thousand Guitars could possibly be? :p

EDM and the culture of Vegas residency DJs and the amount of celebrity and fame they have has always been an odd one to me. Marshmello? I know they are good in hot cocoa and on smores. The Chain Smokers? I only know that as being bad for your health. Dead Mouse? Well, I've done in a few with those slick mouse trap deals (is that still a thing btw?). I guess what I am saying is I'm not really too keen on EDM DJs and guys who stand behind a deck and just push buttons. You want to show skills, get them turn tables spinning, then we can talk.

^^^ Necessary setup. With that rant out of my system, I have to profess I do enjoy this, so I guess it really is just about the music? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ill advised wardrobe choice, but a pretty solid rockin' tune. I think only Robert Plant was able to pull that look off. Oh and Bon Scott of AC/DC too. The whole "pants so tight, I can see your Posted Image"

[EDIT] oh yeah, Jim Dandy from Black Oak Arkansas too https://www.youtube....h?v=n6MkpgAPCLE

Just because it's that time of year...

Trans-Siberian Orchestra!

The Lost Christmas Eve (Full Album)

Weird mix of rock band, orchestra and stage musical. With three Christmas albums... because why not? :)

Noooooo! So I was listening to NPR, and they had a segment with year in review stuff, and to my disdainful chagrin, during part of it, they interviewed Anthony Fontano (aka "the Internet's busiest music nerd"). That hipster music dork really grates on me for some reason. But I gotta give him props, he mentioned this Japanese folk artist as one of the best of 2020, and I got to tell you she is sublime. Seek our her stuff, you won't be disappointed.

Loved this the minute I heard it. This guy wanted to create a tribute to The Strangler's keyboardist (who had died from Covid), and the saxophonist from the Dave Brubeck Quartet (who's anniversary was around the same time). And thus, with a bit of video editing, some looping, and recording his own saxophone skill, he made this.
It's like a comfy pair of slippers.

Came across this track randomly and it immediately went on the playlist.
I was familiar with Hannah Georgas by name, but I don't think id heard any of her songs. The fact that this track had Matt Berninger (lead singer for The National) as a duet, made me curious.
Their voices work really well together. But the measure of how well written this song is, is how beautiful it sounds when it's just Hannah Georgas on her own. She has such an emotive voice.
Here's the duet.

And here's the solo (live) version
