Spite versus Lady Envy

I thought Midnight Tides started slow but it's as nothing compared to TtH I'll just have to muscle through it because I expect like MT whatever happens in i will be super relevant for the next or last book . If Spite and Envy get some role in then at least there's further incentive to read it

It's quite a bit different as a book, as you noted, especially coming from RG, which can't seem to go for 10 pages without some action scenes. I liked it as a whole though, especially the new things Erikson tries, like breaking the fourth wall. Without too much spoiling, it does have quite a bit of build up, since there are so many different storylines, but once the stories get going, things pick up and all of the stories don't end in the last 50 pages, so you do see some action before that.

Also you get some explanations regarding said two sisters and their histories in the end; there's some neatly "hidden" content that's irrelevant to big plots, but interesting to pick up; and in general quite a bunch of fun scenes, even though not on the scale of MT, so bear with it.

'Don't even try', she snarled at him, and then stalked into the tavern.
Gruntle stared after her, 'What did she mean? Try what?'
'Getting under her skirt,' said Quell.
'But she doesn't wear -'
'That's not the point,' the wizard cut in. 'You're thinking like a man. That's your mistake. It's all our mistake, in fact. It's why we're stading out here, three men, no women. If we'd gone and said, why Precious, we wouldn't even think of it, you know what she'd say then? "What's wrong with me? Am I too ugly or something?" and we'd be in trouble all over again!'

Is Lady Envy Soletaken? I ask because it seems to me that not all one's kids will be Soletaken if the parent/s were. I've just finished TtH and there's no indication she can veer.

One would think that with two parents and a sister who are Eleint Soletaken she would also be one, but in the series she has never shown that talent, even when it would have helped, so one assumes she isn't.

Andarist wasn't soletaken despite his brothers being so but I believe that was due to some conscience action on his part to deny that form rather than simply being unable. Envy doesn't spark me as someone who'd deny herself power

Yeah well but Ruin and Rake drank Tiam's blood, it wasn't something they inherited. We know on the other hand, that children of Soletaken Eleint are usually also Soletaken(see Spite, Menandore child in MT)

When I saw Spite veering I fugured it was simply a matter of style preference. Envy preferring sorcery to dragoning it up but seeing as Spite is presented as her equal in sorcery I don't know anymore since Spite being Soletaken should make her unquestionably superior.

I would say Envy is definitely Soletaken. I know we haven't seen it yet, but I'm not sure what scene you guys are talking about that it would have really helped her to veer. In MoI she pretty much tears through the armies without a problem.
Also...Rake apparently likes his women big and scaly.

So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.
It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

You know I can understand Rake and Ruin veering since in their normal forms they appear to be nothing more than exceptionally skilled swordsmen but Envy and Spite are incredibly powerful mages so much so that there doesn't really seem to be much difference in power between one form and the other.

You do realize that this is the Bonehunters forum and you spoiled a fairly big part of the TtH ending there?

Nothing more than exceptionally skilled swordsmen? That's a good one! Remember Rake almost laying waste to an entire Malazan army supported by a number of High Mages and only retreating because Moons Spawn was taking damage in Pale? There are a bunch of topics discussing this and it's usually agreed that since power invites power powerful individuals prefer using martial arts whenever possible as that invites fewer uninvited guests. Convergencies can get real nasty real quick and no one can really predict what's going to happen, when the power level of people attending shoots through the roof.

Well maybe he can do more than a swing a sword gracefully the fact remains that outside of his dragon form that's all I've ever seen him doing so my idea that veering into his dragon forms is more a power up for him than it is for Spite still stands
Anyway you've just reminded me how much I've forgotten from GotM but I can't reread it since Amazon seems to have messed up the delivery of my copy.

Whoa, my bad about that. There was talk about TtH before my post so I didn't even notice the forum. I took out the spoilerific content of my post. Come to think of it, why is this topic even in this forum? A mod should probably move it.

Because the original thread was started 3 years ago, when there was no TtH forum, our quick friend here did a bit of a topic necromancy.

Another point is that in Rake's case, his sword kind of compels him not to rely on magics and rather find entities to drag the wagon away from chaos. Anyway, you're right about that. Off the top of my head, can't think of any other places where we've seen Rake do much magicky other than in Pale and
Spoiler
.As for Ruin vs. Spite, on that count I'd agree. It's a much bigger boost for him than her. Then again, we don't really know how impressive Spite's veered form is, whereas Ruin drank real deep and I got the idea his Eleint form was perhaps second only to Olar Ethil.
