"The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch

Since I don't see a thread about this book, I started one...if only to praise the bejeezus out of it.
I started reading it about 2 days back, and am about halfway, and it is one of the best books by a new fantasy author. Every time I have to put it down...I REALLY don't want to...but a brother HAS to go to work right?
I am completely enthralled so far. This is also how I feel when I read Eriksons books BTW, and I think it's a great solid entry into fantasy, whilst maintaining a refreshingly original world....though clearly borrowed from a Venice-type idea, Camorra is still rife with originality.
It's dirty, it's grimy, it's vicious, and most of all, bloody BRILLIANT!

I just got this book, like, 20 minutes ago. I have heard nothing but good things about this, so really, really look forward to reading it. I just hope it lives up to all my expectations

I really liked the book great fun. It is at once light fun read but with still enough viciousness to satisfy me. He has pulled off the whole thing brilliantly. It is really a great book that I would highly recommend to anyone no matter what they enjoy. Definately looking forward to the next one in the series.

Absolute quality. The flashbacks in particular were great fun.

Both
As it's self-contained, but we will have six 'more adventures of Locke Lamora'. The second book, Red Seas Under Red Skies, is already complete and will be published in June 2007.
Apparently the second novel is also pretty much self-contained, but the fall-out from the first novel sets the tone for the third (sounds familiar...) and then a more serialised, epic story starts to emerge.
IMO, The Lies of Locke Lamora is the best series-opening fantasy novel I've read since A Game of Thrones. Although if Deadhouse Gates had been the first Malazan book, Lamora would slip into third place.

Hmm I'm pretty sure there was another thread about him here somewhere. It's what got me to buy the book... Anyway, I enjoyed it. Good book.

One of the regular posters on the latest Goodkind thread in ASOIAF wrote a quickie cross-fanfic of Goodkind/Lynch. Lynch found it so wonderfully blasphemous he's sending the sellsword a copy "signed in the rudest way possible."

I I actually liked TLOLL BETTER as an opening book than AGOT was....though it is a close race.

Yeah, I'm with you on this Abyss, I too take the forum recommendations seriously.
Especially from Werthead who always seems to know what he's talking about and who is definitely intelligent enough to at least fool me into thinking he does even when he doesn't!
If that makes any sense ...

I actually had this book delivered yesterday, sexy cover, interesting title... I'll start up when I'm done with The Dark Tower (Stephen King, GET TO THE POINT ALREADY!).

I am so excited about reading this. I ordered it yesterday but the lady said it would still take two weeks for it to arrive.
I had a dream last night, dead serious, that htis was the best book I ever read.

250 pages into it and love it to bitts ... I actually am one of the few people who loved GotM, so this book does not reach quite as high, but it's still damn high up there

Splendid. The plan is working.
I wouldn't go as far as saying "It's the best book ever!" but it's certainly one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while. It's more of a caper novel. Think of the financial skullduggery of Feist's Rise of a Merchant Prince (but written more competently) mixed in with a bit of Ocean's Eleven and a dash of China Mieville (in the familiar-feeling-city-which-is-actually-a-bit-weird).

Hm, I would rather compare the city to Vandermeer's Ambergris rather than Mieville's New Cruzbon (spelling?).. Not to be difficult or anything
