They're both great books but such completely different atmospheres.

Agreed.. To my mind, MoI had better action, it was more..epic. With all the big battles, heroic deaths, heroic deeds (Itkovian, Hedge & the BB's)
But.. MT has this darker atmosphere. The ghost of Silchas Ruin is soo.. *shivers* it has some strange flavour of historical irony/metaphor... Plus it has a comic relief in Tehol & Bugg, and two of the most emotionally grown up characters: Trull Sengar and Udinaas... So far? Tied.. But I'm not yet done with MT;)

This is interesting. Two pages of rabid arguments after he already said he would read it:)

I just finished this book yesterday and like others mentioned, had a difficult time at the beginning, but had an even more difficult time putting it aside for the last 300 pages. As usual, Erikson juggles so many plotlines and pulls them together beautifully by the end. Though I still prefer MoI, I think this book is a close second with DG not far behind.
I would add that one avenue of appeal to this book is that the humor is wonderful. For me, Erikson has truly polished that part of his tool kit. Dark and macabre at times, but amusing as well, which gives MT a nice balance.

In my oppinion MT was by far the best book of the series and BH was a bit of a let down. In fact I would say BH is my least favorite of the series so far.

I always thought that Midnight Tides had a slightly Shakespearean flavour to it - comic relief, a touch of Hamlet for the throne scene etc. Midnight Tides is currently my favourite book bar none, for this reason among others.
I personally don't rank Memories of Ice as highly as some of you - while it had the battle of Coral and the death of Whiskeyjack at the end, the climax for me was the amazing sequence that was the siege of Capustan. Unfortunately, that meant that the 500 pages that came after were a bit anti-climactic. Midnight Tides, on the other hand, suffers from no such drawbacks and is therefore in my mind a far better novel. DG comes above MOI for 2nd place in the series.

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

pfft the convergence at the end of Memories of Ice tops all. There is nothing, in all of fantasy that can top the last 200-250pages of Memories of Ice.

i used to be a MOI man but MMT has got me. Its the only book were no viewpoint gets annoying cough mhybe cough. Also everyonbe loves trull. And btw on the threads question is it worth it? What a stupid question. HOC is as many would agree the weakest book but its still a brilliant piece of fantasy. Also MT while deviating from the main series still has a relevant viewpoint of the main characters and future characters.

btw, wtf is with the imperial warren! is that kallors or something since its all dead? and how come we cant draw magic and the like from it like the other warrens? did kellanvend make it? is this a hernia or a boil? FIND OUT MORE WHEN SOMEONE REPLIES TO THIS THREAD!

the imperial warren was created from the mess that Kallor created when he balefired his continent, or whatever he did to it. K'rull took all the crap and buried it. the impression I get is that it's a more or less lifeless warren and can only be used for travelling through... but no doubt someone has another theory
