Well maybe the presence of magic in the air makes particles in the brain of those exposed eradicates forms of insecurity, indecisiveness, and vulnerability to proper mechanical circumstances, ever think of that, hmm?

Is that not just a easy way to avoid have to write proper, well-rounded characters?

My post was obviously a joke, but what's even funnier is that you responded as if it were a serious debate.

I never read this book, but this looks like a very obvious case of someone merely lying to themselves phychologically, because they don't want to admit the truth. That he's probably incapable of taking them on. So he'll just tell himself that he "doesn't want to hurt them". At least that's realistic, but maybe that author made the latter the actual case. 'Least I'm just saying what I think.

I just made that up, it's not from an acutal book. Unless you were just playing along ... >_>

I agree with all the point made.
It's amazing how many authors fall into the same trap even though it's been done so many times before.

Another thing I hate:
When an Author over uses phrases. For instance in Kate Elliots "Crown of Stars" Series three main characters all say pratically the same thing, be it "It's as Da always said ..." or "Aunt Bel always told me...." and the always original, "Ma' always had a saying ...." and this goes on and on all through the 4 books I've read so far. Each one with a new pearl of wisdom, practical style.
It just kills the rhythm of books.

I agree with wry. Its fantasy but theirs still common sense involved.

For instance robert jordans world. I dont care how skilled a fighter you are, If you wearing no armour, wielding short spears and your fighting armoured cavalry your going to die. The aiel would be suited for nothing more than guerilla warfare. Whats worse in book 11 he himself makes use of this obvius flaw but if it worked than why not in the hundred previus battles.

Second the white tower is described as hundreds of metres tall, in a world without elevators or I imagine the plumbing skills to get water to the higher levels its not practical.

Theirs hundreds of others from his world and others to prove the point

@Cause - Agreed on the first point (damned Fremen ripoffs), but Jordan made the point that the 'one Power spells' that maintained the Tower, keeping it rat-and-disease free and whatnot, were failing, so in a world with magic it's not so much a problem to have silly buildings around.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

They can lift things. Why not water? Or magically powered pipelines? If you have a bunch of elitist supernuns, doing something to remove as many labourers from the more important levels of the Tower as possible would seem logical.

EDIT: And they moved into the lower areas because of 1, lower numbers, and 2, losing Travelling. Teleporting into saferooms at the top is easier than lifts by far.

I visited a comics message board, this is nothing.

Betraying my old RJ fanboy leanings here, but the Amyrlin's study is actually only halfway up the Tower. I don't remember why.

Outnerding you here, but that was the old one - the new one is at the top now, due to Elaida feeling insecure.

There is NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY who manages to write in good or at the very least coherent children characters in fantasy

I'll forgive a lot of things in the name of fun, but I'm very rarely able to even look at medieval fantasy without feeling compelled to make a derogatory remark about the writer's crotch-region.

And I hate overdone grit!

Fair enough. Details up to about Book 7 are still stuck in my mind many years later, but from the later books very little sunk in, due to the numbing effect on my brain that the later books had.

Virtually anything that is Tolkienesque: kindly wizards, dark lords, little fuzzy short humanoids, tall elegant humanoids, a king without a throne... If I want Tolkien I'll read Tolkien, it's right up there on my bookshelves. Tell me something I haven't read before.
