I agree that Rel had an affect on Pormqual, but he was still a coward and, and a wretch, and a grrr splutter grrr...(hear me scream whilst gritting my teeth :) )...me no like!
'Tell me, Tool, what dominates your thoughts?'
The Imass shrugged before replying. 'I think of Mafia, Adjunct.'
'Do all Imass think about Mafia?'
'No. Few think at all.'
'Why is that?'
The Imass leaned his head to one side and regarded her. 'Because, Adjunct, they are sheeple.'

Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that frisbee getting bigger?" ... and then it hits me.

Pormqual was being Mokra'd by Mallick Rel. Sure, it's his 'fault', but without Rel there (and Rel had been there a while by the time the disasters with Coltaine and the Aren legion happened) chances are Porm' would have been slightly less of an idiot, been deposed by Admiral Nok, or otherwise removed.

- Abyss, by 'removed', means 'thrown from a high window'.

Do a google on defenestration, Abyss :) (always loved that word...)

Pormqual is not really a loathsome character, just a plain stupid and easily misguided one, especially with Mockra being wielded on him. An avatar of nobility gaining power in the army based on noble rank again instead of merit, if you like.

The reason why Pormqual is mentioned so often is that he's connected to being the main cause of Coltaine's death, one of the most emotional scenes in the series. Or at least that is my view on it.

To those who are voting for Pormqual, ask yourself why you think he's the most loathsome. Then picture Laseen knowingly denouncing the truth about the Chain of Dogs, just for the sake of staying in control of the mobs. Is Pormqual still the most loathsome character now?

I'm not saying Laseen is the most loathsome, or more loathsome than Pormqual. From her POV I can see the reasoning behind it (history is full of similar examples). I don't support such an action, but weak leaders can make weak choices, even if they mean well with it. And she's got a hungry mob to feed.

Although my vote was (and is) for Oponn (because their main intent is to stir up as much trouble as they can, and who cares about what happens), Bidithal is way more loathsome than Pormqual is, and the same can be said for Korbal Broach, probably.

And I seem to recall even those 2's motivations have been stated in the books. Even Korbolo Dom is more loathsome than Pormqual, and we all know his motivation...

And after bonehunters, I developed a healthy disdain for Pearl as well.

Word to that. I was developing some sympathy for him until BH, although I've had problems with him since the last time he stabbed Kalem. INteresting how SE developed the character though, you hate him, then you feel some good could come of him, then you hate him again.
