Just re-read GotM, and there are some mentions of Tyrant-Kings that used to rule darujhistan.
Especially interesting is a part when Circle Breaker is introduced, he walks around the Despots Barbican that's a memory from the Tyrant-Kings, and he reflects that the Despots Barbican still is very strong and that it promises that the Tyrant-Kings will return.

This whole Tyrant thing is very ominous. Of course until Bh we all thought it academic seen as the Jaghut tyrant was dead. This whole thing worries me.
Also did neone else think Vorcan was an Ascendent? There a bit when Rake asks is she capable of killing the cabal. Baruk says their are many paths to ascendency. some more subtle than others. Also her disregard of Baruk ( the highest high mage of the cabal) spell makes it likely

Vorcan was a High Mage and Baruk knows her to be his master in sorcery.. so she's gotta be pretty powerful.. as her perfunctory dealings with Serrat showed.

I suspect a link between Cutter and the Darujhistan Tyrant King(s) seems likely. Maybe not as an heir, but then again, maybe so. Certainly no evidence of Mammot being a biological uncle, but mayeb he was a relative from WAAAAAY back when.
The point is made quite clearly in MoI that Jaghut's no longer have the monopoly on Tyrant-ism.
Now the interesting thing that spins off of this is whether, given an imortal cabal of mages linked to the Tyrant Kings and the Seguleh, whether there are immortals amongst the Seguleh as well.
@Tiam: i could be wrong, but wasn't Baruk referring to him comfort in addressing Rake as an equal there? ergo, nothing to do with Vorcan...
- Abyss, ergo, Abyss.

yes that does provide the simple arguement but i recently finished a reread of GOTM and given that in BH Baruk and the Cabal have now been changed from merely a good cadre of wizards into some sort of ascendent cabal makes it likely that Vorcan is an Ascendent. Also her victory over Serrat adds to this even though it was a bit shaky.
In a nutshell i beleive she is an ascendent/demiascendent but i can see the arguements against it in terms of Baruk referring to himself. However in this large nutshell this again adds veracity to the fact that Vorcan is an Ascendent. How could Baruk an ascendent mage be simply dispelled by a standard high mage? we know abput limits of power and how being an ascendents makes the limit infinite rather than a limited Mortal mage like Vorcan

Tiam - Anomander Rake is clearly not just a High Mage/Soletaken but also one of the more powerful ascendants. However at the end of MoI Korlat is astonished that Rake could withstand the power unleashed by Tayschrenn, who is (as far as we know) just an Imperial High Mage. She says/thinks something like "This is what my lord struggled against. Alone, in the face of such power..."
Thus a powerful high mage is certainly capable of wiping out a more modest ascendant; ie Vorcan probably could take down Baruk.
On the other hand, the fact that she is clearly confident of facing 12 High Mages in series, and is undaunted by having to take on two prepared HMs at the same time, might point at her being ascendant.
On the first hand again, she was taken down by Crokus and a couple of half-bricks.
On the other hand, as you were saying above Crokus too may be more than he seems.
Oh why I am i cursed with seeing both sides to every arguement?

Ascendant or not, Vorcan's magic will be more vicious.
I'm not really surprised that the Cabal turn out to be more than they seemed in GotM. Darujhistan has been pointed out as the prize of Genabackis, and the greatest city on the world. Knowing that, and the fact that the newest (and mostly empty) Azath House is located there, it seems obvious to me that a huge convergence is going to take place there.
Probably even the BIG Convergence that's been hinted at...

I am also cursed. As for Crokus he only got to throw the Bricks because Serrat threw a knife at vorcans chest. Also your reference to Tay isnt really valid as hes not a standard high mage and in NOK (not really a spoiler ) he considered to be the worlds most prominent srocerer and the greatest talent of the age. Some say he was more powerful than Kellenved. So not simply a High mage.

I'm pretty sure that the bricks only worked because they were powered by Oponn, and we all saw the crazy things Oponn could accomplish in GotM and HoC.
