Yep here we go agian:rolleyes:

I've had to rethink my classing of the human mages recently. Untill now I felt tayschrenn was the DON. but recent shows of power from Quick and Pust have got me wondering. Not to mention The jhistal priest (who's name I'll never remember) and the sleeping mage shadowthrone visited that chased away Oponn...

Oh and lets not forget the Tyrant kings. If we had 6 of the greatest mages in an arena...perhaps an island, and they all were keen on killing each other..

A) who would they be and...
:) who would come out on top?

No battle, far too dangerous. When too much power is used during an event, the gods are willing to come and participate. I think that they all know that and will act consequently.

You think Obo is a mage?
I think he's more than that :)
Look at the way Shadowthrone behaved when he went to wake him... he was very very wary indeed. :)

Sounds like a good game... last man/woman standing.. but would there be anthing left of the island?

Who's the 6 best then? And do we discount ascendants?

oh..
Another one of these 'Duke it out till the last man/woman is standing' thing..
And is it just Mages ? can it be warlocks and the like eg; nil, nether and Sormo?

Well I for obviousl reasons would only include mortal human mages.
The 6

Tayschrenn
Kuru Qan
Quick Ben
Pust
Corlo
Cowl (though we dont really have enough on him)
(Though it is stretching it you could put in Kellanved Pre-ascension).

Of the Human Mages out there, I think all those are basically the ones we know of that are powerfull and we have also seen a display of their power.
I mean there was some mage in the Lether Prison(?) or somewhere that was meant to equal the Ceda, or some crazy dude. Then there are also those 3 Tyrant Mage kings. These guys give me the impression that they make Kuru Qan and Tays look like little kids, but we never seen them display their power.

As to who would win ?
Very very tough i would think
It'd come down to Quick, Kuru and Tays I think. Quick solely because he could do some outsmarting, but that would only go so far. Then he dead.
Down to Tays and Kuru Qan..
Well.. i think my brain exploded on that thought.. of who would win.

Oh I almost forgot Our Two necromancers;
Korbal broach and;
Broachalain
There is also Karpolan.

EDIT: And considering how long and drawn the arguments are on these 'fights' I am not going to dispute my above opinion so dont bother arguing..
Comment though by all means..

Okay I say nominate your favourite choices, ONLY SIX.

The ones that occur the most make it to the Island. No gods allowed! ascendants would make it messy so perhaps they get a seperate island, a bigger one made of steel and ottataral walls.

From there you can ascertain who would die first second etc. and finally have decide a winner from general consensus.

As the only Archmage in the series, I'm surprised no-one has brought up Rake yet.

This seems like a very grey area. Rake is given that title but we don't know that he's the only one in the series.
I thought The Ceda would have been excluded, being dead.

I think that if Taychrenn decided to kill Quick Ben on a one-on-one confrontation, it would be hard to say. QB is full of surprises and unknowns. This is such an exhausted topic but I still think that of what we know so far, Taychrenn seems to be QB's superior in terms of raw power... but sorcery is more than that, isn't it? Then counter that with the fact that Tayschrenn knows a lot too...sure, we've seen him raising waves of Telas but who's to say what else he can conjure. Too many unknowns.

Mages (living ones)

Corlo
QB
Tayschrenn
Carpoland Demesand
Iskaral Pust
Obo

The list is much longer than six (Bottle uses Holds and even when the Eres isn't using him, who's to say what new abilities he'll be left with?), excluding non-humans, and even so, there are many hidden surprises....like Obo. There are mages in the Malazan navy who are now able to counter the chaotic Edur sorcery. The Letherii weren't able to....or maybe it's the absence of Hanan Mosag's demon that gave the Malazan mages the advantage.

My six best guessed if they can't have preparation :

Tay
Kuru Quan
Quick (almost a tie would I say with Pust)
Iskaral Pust(almost a tie would I say with Quick)
Tattersail (when she was Tattersail only)
Bottle (A little inexperienced yet)

If they can prepare them self so I guess that Kuru Qan is more powerfull then Tay.

I don't understand why people keeps putting Kuru Quan in third or lower or doesn't metion him... Kuru Quan was the most powerfull human magic wielder on the entire continent of Lether, and unlike the other mages we've heard use their powers yet, he's the only one that can use and keep complete control of a warren (or warrens)

He's closer to anomander rakes power than he is to Tay or Quick

the problem with kuru is that it takes a ritual to show off his power. i doubt if you throw him into an arena with 5 other mages in a fight to the death, they iwll be happy to sit there and wait for him for days to gather his strength...

No the rituals we hear of are for huge spells of mass destruction. You hear of Quick both prepare warrens before a battle and also of him just opening up and giving a blast. Tayscreen is descibed as taking time for the attack on the skykeep in GotM, I even think we hear of Anomander gathering power before his respons to the attack on the Moon.

Think about it, we only hear of Kuru Quan using the Empty hold, he can probably acces many more, seeing as we hear that mages can acces any warren if he has the knowledge needed. Kuru Quan was a genious, Shadow Throne style, he could probably unleash Kurald Galain or Omotose if needed. He would chew up any of the mages of the Malazan empire if he had to.

But then again, he was such a nice old man. In a Battle Royal between mages, he'd probably just mumble something random and then teleport out of the way, to go collect pebbles on the beach for his collection.

The second-best Letherii mage was supposed to be almost as good as Kuru Qan, and she was defeated like she was nothing by the K'risnan. I'd have a lot more confidence in what Tayschrenn or QB could do against the K'risnan, particularly after seeing them in action at Coral.

1. Quick Ben - His versatility is unmatched, plus he gets the special Bridgeburner +5 bonus to all stats. Seeing what he did against Icarium was awe-inspiring.

2. Tayschrenn - He also undoubtedly gets a handy-boost from the Azath. His long life is definitely an advantage, and what he did at Coral was insane.

3. Kuru Qan - Not as strong as the first two...but still definitely strong. Even without the Ritual he probably could've handled Mosag, although it would've been close.

4. Vorcan - IIRC, Serrat was an Eleint Soletaken Tiste Andii Assassin-Mage, which is quite impressive, and it only took Vorcan a single Hand o' Death to take her out. She also managed to take out a couple members of the Everlasting Cabal, and probably would've done for Baruk and Derudan if Crokus hadn't Oponn'd her.

5. Cowl - The best among the Crimson Guard is undoubtedly quite good...good enough that the Crippled God himself is afraid of him. I hope we'll get to see him in action sometime.

6. Iskaral Pust - The only Magi we know of, his display against Dejim was insanely cool. However, his ineffectuality at Tremorlor almost makes me want to take him off the list.

1. Kimloc, it is said that if he would have defended his city, the T'lan Imass would have been necessary

I am assuming only 100% humans (excluding ascendants and gods) count, otherwise Silverfox would be number one

Dryice: Green Pig is dead, isn't he? He was in prison. Besides, he's said to have been an infamous mage but we don't know what he actually did.

The Ceda prepared the tile of the Cedance to intercept the true timing of the Seventh Closure. It necessarily meant that when it occurred, Lether's future ruler would be try to take his throne and so the Ceda would be there to sanction or counter it...a self-fulfilling destiny for him, if you will.

The preparation thing seemed entirely different to me. He was preparing to trap Hanan Mosag's sea demon. That's what he was there doing for days...not gathering power. He had carefully prepared and baitied his trap. He was then waiting....he'd generated (and sustained) a core of power in that submarine chamber to lure it there. It was a waiting game; timing and the players (Mael and the Jaghut sorceress) were crucial.

As for Nekal Bara being "defeated like she was nothing"...well it wasn't the K'risnan Dark Mac. The woman turned herself into a spear of light and pierced the flank of a sea god...a primal spirit, with renewed power. Arahathan failed in confronting it with his sorcery but Nekal Bara was able to infiltrate it. What she, or any human, could NOT have been expected to do, was to deal with all that rose up to greet her within that god....all the memories, the years of worship, spilled blood, atrocities committed in its name AND whatever Hanan Mosag 'fed' it to restore its power... that raw force, she couldn't contend with. I dare say, noone on our list so far could have.

So I say the Ceda was pretty fascinating. He showed amazing stamina and didn't appear to sag, buckle or diminish. His control over the Cedance Ritual threatened to obliterate the entire Edur incursion throughout all of Letheras. Now where else have we seen that sort of display? Even Taychrenn at Pale, was brought to his knees at one point deflecting Rake's sorcery.

By the way Dark Mac, please advise me about Tayschrenn's connection with the Azath. Interesting point.
