Crokus/Cutter...destiny?

In the Tyrant of Darujhistan thread that Apt started, an interesting side-conversation about Cutter broke out. The gist of it was that an awful lot of book-time has been spent on him (one of the few to have POV chapters in 4 of the 6 books), and an awful lot of powerful characters have taken a pretty strong interest in him (Mammat, Oponn, Crimson Guard, Apsalar, Cotillion, Hood, etc.). And the fact that the Soldier of Death may have specifically seeked out Cutter to deliver his messages about the tyrant of Darujhistan may have also been significant.
So I figured, instead of hijacking that thread, I'd bring it up in it's own place: Just what do you expect Cutter's destiny to be? Have we been given any foreshadowing/hints that you want to bring out? And if he is going to become a power in the story the way Paran, Apsalar, Karsa, and Trull have...when will it happen? And what form will it take?

It sure seems likely he will have a large part to play in the future, but I have no idea what exactly.

Well i reckon one of two things (prehaps both)
1) he is currently with Mappo and doesn't really have a lot of say so its pretty sure that he is gonna end up on Lether as to what he does? Anyone guess really
2) It seams like he wants to get back to darujastan pretty bad. I reckon that he will completely change the face of that city.
I also like the theory that he could be a decendent of the origional tyrant himself.

Hmm, and if he was, did Mammoth know?

C/C spends a lot of time trying to fuigure out what is going on. I still think his theory that Shafowthrone's scheme is to sit his scrawny ass on every throne around and proceed to do nothing is quite plausible. (From when he and Apsalar were leaving Drift Avalii).
Also all the philosophising between he and Scillara is pretty interesting.
So, no, I don't really know what his role is going to be - maybe just a philospher who provides interesting insights.

@Madala. That's an interesting thought, and one I was playing with too. Maybe Cutter isn't meant for the ascendant heights, maybe he's meant to be the purely human character that is a foil to the really powerful but still thrives in his own way. For those who've read it, kinda like Simon from Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn...destined to be a regular man, but can lead/relate to both humanity and the really powerful. Similar to Whiskeyjack (assuming WJ really hasn't ascended).
This could also tie in with his possibly budding relationship with Scillara, who is much more "human" than Apsalar was. If Cutter ends up, say, ruling Darujhistan on a human throne, she'd probably make a better "queen" for him than an ascendant uber-assassin...

Heh, cheers drza44, I had thought of the Cutter/Simon parallels myself. Keep in mind though, that this is SE, and he seems to try to avoid cliché’s, so the 'naive, innocent farm boy/thief/kitchen hand grows up to be honourable and kind-hearted leader/king" will likely not apply to this series.
I think he has some really important role to play in the future, though no idea what... I can't see what he could do in Lether...
If Apsalar ever begins to go bad...say, all of this major ass-kicking starts to deaden her humanity, or she's presented with a choice and hesitates to make the 'right' one, perhaps Cutter would be her saving grace. I am curious to see how their reunion turns out.
If Daruhjistan turn out to have some serious tyrant problems in the future, it makes sense that Cutter will play a major role there. But otherwise...not seeing any other plot thread out of this issue.

Well the whole Shadowthrone and Dancer wanting to sit on every throne theory was put out blatantly in Bonehunters when Dancer admits that they had set out to map the Azath, blah blah.
As for Cutter...well it would make sense if we next saw him in Toll the Hounds, which is set on Darujhistan. So I would not be surprised if he doesn't show up in RG.

Well, he's on a boat with Mappo, iskaral et al - which is seemingly headed for Lether.

That doesn't rule that idea out, it just tells us that the two have very ambitious plans. Besides, even though ST and Cotillion are allied, it seems they are sometimes working on different plans.

I never said it did...I was just confirming it with proof from the book

On a side note, I wonder if anyone here knows the answer. Crookus/Cutter is obviously a favourite character of SE and with his rise form humble city thief to assassin to who knows what in the future, I wondered if he may be an RPG character that SE himself played? This would certainly explain the time devoted to him, especially the amount of POV time. Just a thought.

From looking at the world map, I don't think it would be much of a detour for Crokus to get off on Genabackis.

Just for the record Crokus/Cutter was never one of the RPG characters.
Anyway I wonder why the Queen of Dreams seems to be expressing an interest in him. He did witness the conversation between her and Leoman.

hm.. that's odd.. I believe SE once stated that Mappo had been one of his favourite characters when playing, or suchlike

Btw, the fact that RG is set in Lether, doesn't mean i will not follow MT and so be a prequel to the rest of the series the way the fifth book was.
On a (very) side note - was the sorceror in the Sylanda, which Karsa killed, Binadas Sengar?

Yes, that was Binadas Sengar.
And we know that RG takes place after Bonehunters and isn't another prequel. SE has said, I believe, that the rest of the series will follow on time-wise, with no more books like MT.

Forgive my ignorance but how do we know it was Binadas?
With regards to cutter I always thought there was a possibility he and Apsalar would acquire quite a bit of power. In House of Chains they are likened to Kellanved and Dancer.

Proof that it was Binadas - conversation in BH. I forget if it was Icarium or Karsa's party of Edur, but it's stated that Tomad Sengar sent Binadas, on the Silanda, to look for his lost son. It's obvious this is Trull, though Fear remains a remote possibility, since the Edur probably consider him lost too.
And when Tomad sees the Silanda among the Malazan fleet he is crushed - he assumes his son, Binadas, has been killed by the Malazans, and so he has lost two children (Trull & Binadas). We know it was actually Karsa who did it, but that still doesn't change the fact that Binadas has bought the farm.
Which is a shame, I wanted to know more about him...
it is weird, if you think about it, we didn't meet Binadas the character until MT, yet we saw Binadas the corpse way back in DG. Just goes to show the scope and organisation that has gone into the series...

I don't see the similarity between the pairs to be honest.
Apsalar-Cotillion are both assassins, and obviously share a lot.
Kellanved-Cutter seem nothing alike, Cutter shows nothing like the intelligence Kellanved has nor his ambition and skill.
Comparing Cotillion to Apsalar is obvious, but Cutter and Kellanved are not at all alike.
