maybe ok crazy theory.

the azath are his children. or his child. maybe he inherited the deadhouse and that explains tempers connection as otherwise his mentioning is completely random.
Spoiler

[edit] not everyone have read NoK, that should not be so difficult to consider when writing - Morgoth

Nonsense, the Azath are much older than Kellanved.

I meant more in the context of:

"The old heart of the Malazan Empire was wounded, and he did not expect it to survive much longer."

It just sounds like it might be applicable to the Deadhouse. But as I said, I'm not sure of the context of this remark at this exact moment, so it could be utter rubbish.

Ah, I thought that Tayschrenn was the 'third' companion. On re-rereading
Gardens of the Moon, Bellurdan(I think) says that Tayschrenn was there from the beginning and shaping the empire. Sort of being a "balance" for the vision of Kellanvedd, unless I misread the conversation.

K&D are not gay. SE's writing is filled with men having deep, close, and meaningful relationship with one another, Iccy/mappo, QB/kam, Tel/Bug, Karsa/leoman( accualy karsa has had alot), Tool/ Toc..ect and it having zero to do with sex. My guess is that SE has had a very good buddy in his life and is drawing from that when he writes( maybe ICE?).

And yes there has been male homosexual char's the Erent and i think a few of the priest's have been described as liking boys.

And as for the third person who was there from the start Surly (aka the Empress) was certainly there from the start as she was the waitress in K&D's bar. And i always took the ST's child statment as being the empire.

I haven't got the quote to hand, but I'm pretty sure it makes pretty specific reference to 'before even Surly' but I could be wrong.

I don't think there's any referenced man/man sexual relationships (he certainly has a lot of close friendships - Whiskeyjack/Dujek, Mappo/Icarium, Dancer/Kellanved, Quick/Kalam, Fiddler/Hedge - but there's no reference I can see to anything else), though there's certainly a few ladies... was I the only one who thought Picker and Blend got it on? I'm thinking specifically of the scene at the Barghast camp in MoI.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

There's been a few instances of gay characters - the Errant and the Chancellor, I thought Buruk the Pale was gay/bi, Karsa killed two men in bed together during one of his rampages. Nothing else springs to mind.

Picker & Blend were definitely a couple, it's confirmed during one of their POV's.

is it confirmed or just hinted. i thought there was just the quote in the barghast camp were blend hooks her arm round picker and goes 'its all up to what night hides.'?

Yes i completely agree to this. the old heart must be the dead house. it was the 'unassailabe base of operations' mentioned in HOC.

Also the 3rd person is definitely not surly. the quote is

'before Dujek before even Surly' by apsalar this is on drift avalii. another fact supporting thats its dassem is apsalars viewpoint in DG when fiddler asks why dancer never showed himself to them. it said that dancer only trusted mortal kellenved and dassem ultor.

I never said Leoman was gay. I think the fact that Corrabb immediately hates the first woman to come properly close to Leoman in a long time (as a companion as well as just a whore...) says something...

Picker thinks of Blend as "my love" during a POV towards the MoI - the scene when Rake meets the few surviving BB's and claims the honour of walking out of Coral with them.

I thought it was Blend who thought of Picker as 'my love' in a scene with Envy in the keep... Meh, same thing.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

No one likes seeing their hero figure as human, with flaws and whatnot.
