Anyone care to name a particular, specific scene from the books that would look good in an oil painting?

I wouldn't mind the practice, but am having trouble deciding upon something ... singular.

Trull vs. a Jheck wolf comes to mind.
Tool vs. Mok - or, rather, the moment before they begin.
The Enfilade at Pale - some dramatic moment in the middle of that mess.
Crokus on the rooftops of Darujhistan (generic scene).
Korlat beneath a raining Moon's Spawn, amidst the carnage of Black Coral.
The strategy conference at Capustan (post battle), emphasis on Itkovian.
The Crippled God, alone in his tent (generic scene).
Fiddler playing one of his games, perhaps with Hedge and Trotts.
Karsa while making his sword.
Anomander Rake and Whiskeyjack at rest.

Note that I'm looking for something with a certain drama or poignancy to it, or perhaps something generically representative of a character or place - but nothing comic-bookish action style, if you know what I mean, but you probably don't.

Suggestions? I've only got time for two or three, and they'll most likely be fairly rough, but I need the practice at painting people especially ...

Those are some good scenes, for me one of the most poignant is...

Anomander Rake and Whiskeyjack at rest

Just what I was gonna suggest, Traveller. That would make an awesome painting.

Quite like the idea of one of Fiddler's card games too:)

Why the assumption?:Erm:

Anyways....Ilike the idea of a painting of Karsa shaping his sword......representative of said character in a number of ways:) , which I assume is what you were looking for?:)

These two would be fantastic painted, as would the Karsa one (or him on Havoc facing Tavore and the 4th at the end of HOC), or 'The Eve of the Seventh Closure', or Tehol in the dress talking to Bugg, or... there are so many excellent scenes to choose from, it's impossible to narrow it down to just three.

I'll make a stab at it though - Korlat, Karsa and the 14th, and just before the duel in Simtal's Fete. (I couldn't think of a good place during Pale to show Rake)
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'm not sure if I could quite bring myself to do that one.

Note that I'm also not entirely interested in doing something with comedic overtones, so no "Coltaine hands out a promotion" scene, or Bugg-Tehol - they'd probably make good art, but I'd like to use my moderate free time and materials on something more serious.

Now that I think of it ... Rhulad on his throne, brooding, with Udinaas back and to the left in the shadows. No-one else around.

Ok then. King Ezgara Diskanar, slumped on his throne as Nifadas emptily proclaims the Seventh Closure and raises him to Emperor. I love that scene, it's so despairing.

yeh the dragons returning would be good or bugg talking to that painter as the edur turn up. dunno why just a small view of bugg and he painter with the fleet/army taking up the most of the picture.

thats a good one but if you're looking for a moving piece itkovians grave with the army lining up or surounding it would be just as powerfull.

Incidently the same can be said for itkovian accepting the t'lan imass.

Quick Ben talking to Hairlock on the "Spar of Andii". That would be sweet I imagine. Also Kallor sat on his throne, the land devastated to the horizon, with the Elder God's approaching.

So many great scenes come mind.

But off the top of my head (and without giving too much away):

1) GOTM - siege of Pale when Rake steps out on the ledge to give his response. In the foreground, the three hills with the Malazan forces in formation (before all hell breaks loose).

2) DHG - outside the gates of Aren at the end of COD's march. As Squint takes his shot from the fortress wall over looking the battlefield.

3) MOI - Kallor (and Rake) facing down the gathering of Brood and Co after "it seems you stand alone......"

4) HOC - final scenes where Pearl and Lostara meet Tavore to complete their mission. With spectators standing in background.

5) MT - final scenes in the throne room when the Lether Champion takes his drink.
