That's what the commander of the grey helms calls QB. Upon which QB mutters "****". Any ideas on that one?

Yeah, of course, but why does QB say **** when the grey helm guy smiles and bows at him. It's recognition, no?

I'm also unsure on that. I think it's probably part of his whole doesn't-like-to-be-noticed thing - he doesn't want people to pay much attention to him, because attention means risk. When the Destriant addresses him, it shows they know who he is, which is bad in his eyes, because it means they might expect things of him.

Well I just bumped this back up.
The Lord of High Diction. This really made me wonder. The thing is, it was kalam who said it so it's probably just some BB joke but i looked the word Diction up any way, and it doesn't make much sense.
"Diction - the manner of enunciating words and sounds."
Well, english isn't my first language but what's this suppose to mean. Is kalam just refering to QB's elusive slipperiness? Or is there some kind of use of the word I'm unfamiliar with? I dont have a huge Oxford dictionary.

I think in this sense diction could be better defined as 'the choice of words'. With that in mind, the joke makes more sense.

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

Boy, talk about overanalyzing the joke...
The joke is funny, but like a lot of Erikson's humor, it goes over some people's heads. Lets' just leave it at that.

Without having the book infront of me, I believe that Kalam is making a quip concerning Ben's lack of eloquence. The Grey Helm pays him great respect, as if he is a man of prestige, an equal even, and all Ben can do is respond like an uncouth sailor. Kalam found that funny.

Well I found it very funny... QB muttering "oh sh**" and Kalam taking the piss out of him... I love Erikson's humour

Diction probably isn't the appropriate word... but QB used it moments before : he recognizes the diction of the Grey Helms. So Kalam is just using his own words against QB...
I just loved the whole coward-QB show - when he's hiding from Tavore among the cargo...

High diction= eloquent phrasing and general articulate use of language.
Mono syllabic curse words such as **** are not High Diction
That was the joke. Not too difficult

Really? I figured it was a sideways reference to QB's mad skillz with the ladies, because... oh, wait, nevermind... forget i said anything...

I think it might be a foreshadowing of a new house in the Deck of Dragons, High House Diction.
