I do love the bit where he waves to the Edur though! Quality!:)

So did I! :)

As for how dangerous he is to everybody around him, what else can you expect from a Mott Irregular (and a Bole to boot) becoming a Malazan Sapper? :)

The idea I always got from the Bole brothers was that they killed wizards. They wipe out that necromancer in their territory, then they go and gack wizards in Coral, and finally they intend to deal with the 2 murderers/necromancers.

Jamber Bole/Crump's dream while under the influence of the honey made me think that he had become a wizard and thus had to flee his brothers. I thought that the Bole's were all warlocks, like Nil/Nether and they don't like modern mages who use warrens.

Anyway, yah, I'm also surprised he wasn't killed off. I can only guess that its Pormqual syndrome all over again. Malazan's obey the rules even when that lets idiots like Randal/Pormqual/Crump do more damage to the army as a whole.

But he's the comic relief, you can't kill him!

He'll probably turn out to be a Bole Brothers spy among the Malazans, and he'll call in the rest of the Mott Irregulars at some opportune moment to save everyone's skin.

Last actual Malazan fragging I can think of is Sorry garroting the Senior Claw after the disaster at Pale. This might not even count because Cotillion isn't Malazan anymore, and the Claw wasn't really part of the army.

It seems like Dassem Ultor's style of command is that everyone just does their own thing. This is clearly both a strength and a weakness. It is a strength when it nets them Ascended members. Bottle is permitted to do his shamanism stuff, Sinn and Grubb become randomly awesome. Coltaine's Sappers desert the night before a battle to sneak out and lay a deathtrap for the enemy heavy infantry. Paran punches out a captain and takes over an army, despite being an Outlaw. Bottle's connection to the Eres'al defeats the Eduur fleet's attack. Grubb's delaying of the fleet by a day permits that to happen. All of these are instances where people who would have been disciplined in a Korbolo Dom style army came through for the goodguys thanks to their unorthodox moves. (Buzzing the control tower.) On the balance they are very succcessful, primarily due to this philosophy.

However, it does trip them up occcasionally. Crump's detonation of too many munitions, Pormqual's taking the advice of Mallick Rel instead of Blistig, Rantal ordering his troops to use a sandstorm for cover, the Dogslayer's following Korbolo when he deserted. There are many occasions where there are consequences for the Malazan's lack of discipline.

I did not find that there. It was just told that Crump was fleeing his brother because of what he had done. No further explanations.
And I am not sure that they have something against mages using warrens in general. Necromancers yes, that is said in MoI. Totally not sure about that. The Mott Irregulars and especially the Boles are still a mistery for me.
Personally, I find that Crump is quite funny.

pannion: if you look, the malaza army are the most disciplined. i believe that in dhg, there is a talk about the cause of the malaz army success. and thats it, each unit is deisnged to wokr on its own, and that certain unit are expected to be crazy adn unpredictable..

i mean who else but the crazies will be willing to carry around exploding ammo all day everyday where it could blow them and everyone around them up?

I think thats what makes them so strong the fact that any single soldier is a strenght on his own but put them all together (with a little training) and you've got yourself a kick a$$ army. Their disiplin is also shown in MoI, Dujek had a very organised army which i think will suit Paran well.

That's it exactly, Tiger_sword. And Crump is only one of the crazy heads in this army (maybe thecraziest), making it so uncalculable for their enemies.

I makes me to recall of Jar Jar Binks.
And being a fan of Starwars, this is not a nic comment.

However, I believe that he will have a role to play in what is coming.

Sometimes I just get the feeling if you apply for a job in the Malazan army as a sapper one requirement is: The madder the better. The sappers are a really crazy bunch with Crump topping them all. But somehow I think if they were only half as crazy as they are they would not do such a good job (with exceptions ;) ).

The sapper are considareted as crazy by all normal people due to the fact that are taking huge risk doing their job. However the fact is that with those ricks, only the more skillfull managed to survive.

Agreed, but skillful and crazy do not exclude each other.

You're thinking of the Chain of Dogs sapper captain ?

I was not thinking of anyone particular. It is just a general feeling I have about the Malazan sappers: Crazy but being somehow the heart of the army and for their craziness just being unpredictable. The nightmare of their enemies.
What scene do you refer to? Man, I should reread the series completely as soon as possible, I lost so many details.
