How is gesler on the edge of ascendancy

What i never got was that how is gesler (and probably truth and stormy too) almost ascendant, is it because of the Warren of Fire they crossed? or too much time on the Silanda???

it's because of their journey through the elder warren, where they were "burnt" by the magical fire.

Ascension's a funny thing. Technically, just by virtue of no longer being baseline humen, all three are already 'ascended'. But apparently not full blown 'ascendants', so far as we see in DG.

Haven't got to that point in bk 6, so at a guess, death or similarly traumatic event with enough experience and/or power invested in them that they rise again.

- Abyss, has had vacations that should serve as basis for ascension.

Did you mean Coltaine?
Well as I understand it from the reactions of those present at the time, everyone thought that in order to do that, Coltaine himself must have been in a similar state.
