IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED DEADHOUSE GATES YOU PROBABLY SHOULDNT READ THIS CUZ I RUIN A FEW THINGS
i just finished readin deadhouse gates and was shocked that Erickson so effortlessly killed the defenders of the chain. COLTAINE IS A LEGEND.
so, im about to start reading MOI but want to know what has happened to Coltaine and Duiker. at the end of the book the crows flew to that lady somewhere and "the child inside her began stirring" is Coltaine reborn? much in the way Tattersail was in the GOTM. And duiker, with that thing around his neck? will he be reborn? if so when does it happen?
i just need to get these questions answered cuz such a powerful army doesnt deserve an ending like that.
oh and yes, I HATE PORMQUAL CUZ HE COULD HAVE UNSCREWED ALL THIS MESS

Yes, I presume Coltaine will be reborn. As for Duiker... something was supposed to happen with Coltaine, and Duiker took his place instead. From context, it looks like he's going to be returned to life, in his body. Which, hopefully, will be repaired somewhat

Sorry to ruin your hopes, but SE clearly stated that Coltaine would not reapear in his books.
Cheers

Spoiler
reading the title of this thread (and respect to the screen name) brings back memories of reading Deadhouse for the first time - still for me the most tragic death in the whole series...
but to be fair with a name like 'pormqual' what do you expect

man i can imagine how the really hardcore readers felt. i read deadhouse gates over about 4-5months with about 2 of on off reading and a massive break, but nearing the end of the march i couldnt put it down, i was waiting for Coltaine at least to make it through the gates. but i can see Ericksons flair and that he wasts us not to get complacent that the main characters will always live.
anyway im about to read book 3, im just wondering if there is any jumps back to kalam, fiddler or even crokus? or will i have to wait until book 4?
LONG LIVE COLTAINE AND HIS AWESOMENESS
................LONG LIVE PORMQUALS RAGING HOMOSEXUALITY, HIS HERPES, HIS INBRED MOTHER WHO IS HIS SISTER, HIS BABY FLESH FETISH AND EVERYHING I COULD POSSIBLY SAY TO VOICE MY DETEST FOR THAT 'TARD'
god i want to kill him myself...........
am i getting too into this thread and story in the book? or did anyone else feel the anger i did when they just stood there(pormqual and the army)......cuz i also hate nobels and cheered (in my head, im not some D+D player) when Duiker kicked him in the throat

Coltaine already is reborn. As you see in the Epilogue of the novel. As for playing a part...he's a still baby he won't have any input in the series. Wait till Book 4 for all of those characters. We go back to remaining characters from GotM in Memories of Ice.

IMHO Pormqual managed one thing by leaving Coltaine to his fate and surrendering his own army: making Tavore an even colder iron.
Btw, why Pormqual, and not Mallick Rel, the Jhistal traitor? The High Fist was a simple puppet - although definitely an irritating, incompetent idiot.

Ha if he annoys you now wait till BH. You will want to throw the book across the room!

Well you can't really hate Mallick Rel, because unlike Pormqual who grandly screwed up, Mallick Rel succeeded perfectly. He was the cold-calculating man that reached the ends he intended, because he was truly with the cause of the Rebellion. And I'm sure you don't hate guys like Leoman, or Toblakai (you love the latter especially in Book 4).
Anyways, Mr. "I hate Pormqual", yeah, Pormqual was supposed to give that impression, and I'm sure nobody thought too fondly of him. This is, of course, after reading the whole book through Duiker's eyes, and sympathizing with him. Pormqual wasn't an evil man, just truly incompetent. He listens to the first story relayed to him and no others, and tends to weigh the words of noble born more highly than others, which was why Duiker got screwed by the noble guy reaching Pormqual first. He's also incredibly naive and tactically ignorant, which was what led to the demise at the end of the day.
So yes, he's supposed to leave that impression. But, of course, hatred driven such as your own always leads mankind to enforce equal tyrannic injustices with the intent of having answered other injustices. You'll see what I mean once you finish reading Memories of Ice.

It sounds like a sitcom... "Everyone Hates Pormqual"... set in Aren where everyone comes and goes from the palace living room and Pormqual's decapitated corpse just sits there rotting quietly...
Lostara Yil: Fist! The peasants are revolting!
Tene Baralta: You can say that again, they stink!
Lostara: No you moron, that's Pormqual's decapitated corpse you're smelling.
*cue laughtrack*
- Abyss, could write for NBC.

Since you know they are alive at the end of DG, I suppose it's not a horrific spoiler violation to state that Kalam, Crockus, Apsalar and Fiddler all show up in HoC. You won't be dissappointed.
- Abyss, was not dissappointed.

At least i didn't spoil that bit where that guy does this thing where he goes to this place and sees some stuff that's actually a hint at other things that happened before.
On point, Fiddler certainly comes into his own as a developped character in DG. He was a barely a bit player in GotM.
- Abyss, topically challenged.

Which is what I don't understand, why he is a High Fist in the first place. (Currently reading MOI myself), and every Fist/High Fist for the Malazan Empire I've seen so far is very able military commander. In fact it seems as if the Malazan Empire prides itself in promoting those that show considerable skill at their jobs (no birthright type of leaders). I don't want a spoiler, but do we find any reason later on that Pormqual made it to High Fist?
