Firstly, who/what are the riders?
Secondly, Who was the Fisherman who rode out and sang the chant to stop the riders?
Thirdly, does Kiska (or whatever) die, because she has taken the number one spot of annoying characters in the world of malaz... ;)

Will I find all this out by the end of the book?

Read the book, then you can answer that question for the unfortunate ones who don't have the opportunity themselves.

I know... I feel like that about the MBOTF books... it's nice to be reading this for the first time...

Anyways, onto a discussion... Kiska? Why?

Kiska.....
Well, she's an important PoV character for one. The means by which we can experience the tale as outsiders looking at great events. Also, and brace yourself for this, I think she might appear in BH. I didn't like her too much either, but I've always thought a character that evokes a heartfelt response is well written. Besides, one might assume her years of training and field work will have gifted her some wisdom and maturity.

How about Temper, eh? He's a bit fantastic, ain't he? Eh?
And now you've a better idea about just how *%€£$#!@ Dassem is.

The Riders seem to be refered to as alien beings who came to be through some Jahgut sorcery. They were probably pulled through unexpectedly during a great use of their warren. They have been mentioned twice iirc, in NOK and HD or BF.

I thought it was Temper who was supposed to appear in BH. Great character really. Have to love how he never realizes just how good a warrior he is.

As for Kiska, i agree with Set' about her being a great viewpoint character. Without her, the entire Tays/Kellanved/Dancer/Surly interaction would just lose you.

The Riders are interesting - there's an implication of a Jaghut link, but also a human one right at the end.

The Fisherman was apprently an ascendent who drew on the strength of the island's magical population to push back the Riders, but he was too weakened by Laseen's purge. I did think his sequences were quite amazing tho', especially how the riders ultimately took him out.

- Abyss, STILL says a cheap, widely distributed NoK would have been a perfect intro for the entire series.

Somebody suggested that the fisherman might be Chem, and that's the best idea I've heard.

Damn it, that's the first time since I finished MT people have referred to a character and I have no clue who it is. Hopefully, it's from HD or BF, else I really have forgotten it ;)
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Chem was the object of worship for a local(to Malaz island) sea cult, or something very similar. That's why he's not mentioned anywhere else, I suppose.

I think the riders rae frpm jaghut origins definitely. Ive just finished reading it(like 5 mins ago) and i remember someone saying about there was a heart of jaghut ice under the sea. Also ne1 noticed the only mention of Nachts in this book(appart from MT). And there created by the jaghut so it must be jaghut linked. I believe malaz is a hotbed for sorcerous talent as it was a jaghut dwelling millenia ago and its constant exposure to OP has made people think. Also who or what were auntie argyal and ordo or watever there nmaes were. were they like high mages or sutton?

And who the f**k was edgewalker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speculation on Edgewalker includes him being a mage who once tried to conquer KG, or Meanas, a Tiste with similar ambitions, Scabby Bloodeye in disguise, and Jimmy Hoffa.

Jedhel, on the other hand, seems simpler - a demon lord who tried to take over Meanas and failed.

It appears that bad things happen to those who try to seize control of the Meanas, at least, if not KG.

- Abyss, tried to seize control over the remote control and failed.

According to Edgewalker, Kellanved and Dancer are going to fail as well... Though they seem to be doing alright for themselves.
I thought Edgewalker was a T'lan Imass, purely because he was always being described as dessicated flesh etc. Which is how the imass are always described in MBOTF...
I truly hope Temper comes back in BH and not Kiska. She was just a moany kid who deserved shooting or something...
