Could someone help me out by telling me how to pronounce the main names? I always hate it when I say them wrong.

I think most of them are pretty straightforward.
An-om-an-der Rake
G (as in 'grape')-an-o-s Par-an
Tattersail
Wis-ky-jak
D-u-jek Won-arm

I have wondered about names like Tiste Andii. Is it:
TEE-stay an-Dee, or
Tist an-Dee, or
Tisty an-Dee, or ... ad infinitum?
I tend to go with the first one. Dunno why, guess it sounds more exotic.

I think it's Tee-st, Like Piste and to rhyme with Feast and Least.

I picture it as "TIS-te AN-dyi" -- I figure there's a reason for the two i's in Andii.

And I personally pronounce "Ganoes Paran" as "GAY-nosh PARE-an," but that's just me. I doubt that anyone else does so.

A guide to pronunciation as in Tolkien would be nice, but also quite difficult to do. I suspect that the number of imaginary languages these names are drawn from would make a clear useful guide impossible. Plus I doubt that SE has given these names any real linguistic significance in the first place. I imagine they're mostly just "fantasy" names, and any etymological background for them comes second. Pronunciation in some of them may not even be clear to SE himself, for all we know...

SE or Patch said that :

Tiste ('i' as in bike and silent 'e')

and I think Andii is "and-ee-eye" or "and-ee"

Cool.

Another chapter for the Encyclopaedia Malazica then. There can never be enough! Oh, hang on, as long as it gets published, that is ...

I always saw Tiste Andii as being pronounced Tis-Tee An-dee (but keep the Tee and Dee short.)
But if Erikson says it is pronounced ticed... then, hey I'll go with that. ^_^

It was Mal who mentioned the Tiste business. And he said it's more along the lines of Heist.

He got that from SE.

I just finished GOTM and had trouble with some pronunciations.Too bad they didn't have these on CD or audio tape,it would be worth a listen just to hear how they should actually be pronounced.

Ok, I'm just gunna come right out and say it.

T-i-s-t-e is a really poor way to spell something you want pronounced that way.

It should be Teist or Tyst... ok while trying to come up with alternate spellings i realised 'taste' is spelled and pronounced the same way... i still don't like it tho...

I've never said anything bad about SE before...

You know, even thought we've had "official" confirmation of how to pronounce Tiste Andii, I'm going to continue to say it the same way I always have, which is definitely not how Pallor just described it. ;)

always thought "Tiste" was like "beast" with a "T". Heist seems wrong.
